There can be very large breeding herds of Elephants, at certain times of year more than 450 strong. There are big numbers of Buffalo and large resident herds of plains game (including huge herds of up to 3000 Topi – unheard of in this ecosystem).
The large predators seldom disappoint and the Lions and Cheetahs head the cat sightings table while large clans of Spotted Hyena are common on the plains. Exciting spotlit night drives in certain areas of the concession reveal a myriad of shy, seldom seen nocturnal animals and birds. Bat-eared Foxes, Bush Babies, Spring Hares, Civets, Genets, Porcupines and Owls are often spotted and more rare sightings include Aardwolf, Caracal, Serval and Striped Hyena.
Special sightings here at Grumeti will include 2 of the primate species – the Colobus Monkeys down on the Grumeti River and the Pata’s Monkeys, out on the plains. The Roan Antelope, a shy and seldom seen large horse antelope, can sometimes be spotted. The birds to really keep a look out for include the endemic Fischer’s Lovebird, Grey Breasted Spurfowl, Rufous Tailed Weaver, Grey Crested Helmet Shrike and if you’re really lucky the Karamoja Apalis. All 5 of these birds have very small distributions and can be seen nowhere else in the world.
