Day notes
Begin your trip with an early flight to Kihihi Airstrip where you are met and transferred to your lodge, around 60 minutes drive up into the forest. After settling in you have the opportunity to explore and partake in local activities;
- Buhoma Community Village Walk: A 3-hour guided walking tour of the village. You'll meet local medicine men, visit Mukono Primary School, see how banana gin is traditionally brewed, and observe local farming.
- Batwa Cultural Experience: Learn about the indigenous Batwa pygmies, the ancient hunter-gatherers of the forest. Through the Batwa Experience, you can learn ancient survival skills, watch traditional dances, and hear folk tales.
- Ride 4 a Woman Cycling & Crafting: Support a local women's empowerment initiative by renting a mountain bike for the 8-mile (13 km) Ivy River trail or local village loops. You can also take a basket-weaving or cooking class at the Ride 4 A Woman center in the village.
- Forest Nature Walks: Take a shorter, guided hike through Bwindi to the beautiful Muyanga Waterfall or go bird watching. The forest is a renowned birding destination, home to over 350 species.
On day two is your gorilla trek!
You will have an early start from the lodge, walking to the nearby park headquarters, where you receive a briefing and select your porters [optional] for the day. Then you’re off on a drive that may last anything from 10 minutes to 2 hours before you start your gorilla track. The tracking can be strenuous because of the steep slopes and the high altitude. Initially, you will walk along established paths, your ranger coordinating with the advance trackers by radio to guide you in to the gorillas last known location. As you get to where the gorillas are, you will leave the paths and begin hacking your way through the slippery underbrush. Your porters will stay back as only the 8 guests and ranger approach the gorillas to spend a magical hour with them. The hour passes all too quickly, and then it’s time to make your way back to the waiting vehicles.
