Day 4: Northern Serengeti

The Northern Serengeti in September is a truly magical place, offering one of nature's most awe-inspiring spectacles: the Great Migration in full swing. During this time, massive herds of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle move across the Mara River in search of greener pastures, often facing dramatic river crossings where crocodiles and swift currents add a raw, untamed element to the journey.

This region is known for its rolling hills, open woodlands, and acacia-dotted plains, providing a striking contrast to the more open grasslands of the Southern Serengeti. The landscape is lush and vibrant following the earlier rains, and wildlife is abundant—not just the migratory herds, but also resident lions, elephants, giraffes, leopards, and a wide array of birdlife.

September is part of the dry season, so vegetation is thinner, making wildlife easier to spot. The weather is typically warm during the day and cooler at night, with minimal rainfall, making it an ideal time for game drives and photography.

Day 9: Lake Magadi

Today we make our way to the iconic Ngorongoro Conservation Area.  The Ngorongoro Crater, located in northern Tanzania, is one of the most extraordinary natural wonders in Africa. It is the world's largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera, formed about 2 to 3 million years ago when a large volcano exploded and collapsed. The crater is the world’s largest intact crater, covering an area of 304 square kilometers and is part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We will settle in at Ngorongoro Serena Lodge, nestled high above the plains into the Crater’s jagged rim, cloaked in river stone and indigenous vines, Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is barely visible to the naked eye. Framed by arched stone passages and timbered decks, its torch-lit walls are adorned with stylized cave paintings. At the stone heart of the lodge burns a glowing fire, which is kept constantly alight. Rooms are looped around the Crater rim. Each has its own rock- enclosed balcony, and all enjoy completely uninterrupted views of the volcanic amphitheater far below. Our Ngorongoro hotel lodge is a place that feels as ancient as the Crater itself, yet no modern comfort has been spared to bring you the best safari adventure in Africa and one of the most unique travel experiences in the world.

Day 10: Lake Magadi

Today we will get an early start to Ngorongoro Crater for a day on safari.  We will enjoy a picnic lunch down in the crater at a special spot.

The Ngorongoro Crater, often referred to as the "Eighth Wonder of the World," is a breathtaking natural wonder nestled in the highlands of Tanzania. Formed over two million years ago, this ancient volcanic caldera spans about 100 square miles and boasts one of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet. The crater's steep walls create a natural enclosure for a wide variety of wildlife, including the Big Five—lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros—making it a prime destination for wildlife enthusiasts.

The Ngorongoro Crater is also home to a significant population of Maasai people, who coexist harmoniously with the area's wildlife. Their presence adds a rich cultural dimension to the natural beauty of the region. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Ngorongoro Crater offers visitors a unique opportunity to witness the intricate balance of nature and human history in one of the most stunning settings in the world.
