Day 2: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

This morning you will wake up early and after a big breakfast set off to the starting point of your gorilla safari. You will meet up with your trekking guides and porters and receive a detailed briefing on your days trek by your head guide.

Setting off with your group, guides, porter’s and packed lunch with lots of water.

Today’s activities may be amongst the most exciting and challenging you have ever undertaken. The Mountain Gorillas in Uganda are part of a worldwide population of just 720 individuals. The gorillas we are allowed to track belong to one of eight habituated family groups. For up to five years each, these groups have undergone an extremely delicate process that has gradually brought them to tolerate the presence of humans for a brief period every day.

The gorillas are by no means tame, and are completely wild animals. However, the experienced guides accompanying you have been involved in the habituation development. The guides will use their knowledge of the gorillas’ habits and information from the previous day to locate the group’s whereabouts. Because of this, the time taken to track the gorillas varies enormously, from as little as half an hour to as much as the whole day before one returns to camp. Once the gorillas are located, your group will be allowed a maximum of one hour with them, often over all too quickly. A very memorable experience – and good to know that our presence here contributes to ensuring their continued survival.

When your precious hour is up, your guide will lead you away from the gorilla family and back to the safari starting point.
