Expert tips

Tarangire is a great start for any safari. This picturesque park features three main highlights:

  1. Ancient Baobab Trees: Large groves of ancient Baobab trees, some nearly 800 years old, create an imposing and majestic landscape.

  2. Large Elephant Herds: Tarangire is home to significant herds of elephants. These gentle giants often feed at the base of the Baobab trees, sometimes stripping away layers of bark.

  3. Scenic Viewpoints: The park offers slightly elevated viewpoints over river valleys, providing stunning panoramas of palm trees, abundant herds of wildlife, and occasional predators such as lions.

Choosing Camps for the Great Migration

It's important to remember that the Great Migration moves in a large circle, in a clockwise direction, almost throughout the entire year within Serengeti National Park. The only two months when the migration is not seen within the Serengeti are late July to early September when they typically move over the northern border into Kenya's Maasai Mara National Reserve.

Northern Serengeti (Elewana Serengeti Migration Camp)

  • Best Months: Early July to late August/early September. The migration then moves into the Maasai Mara National Reserve and returns to Northern Serengeti in early/mid-October, with viewing best enjoyed until mid-November.

Southern and Central Serengeti (Elewana Serengeti Pioneer Camp)

  • Best Months: Early December to mid-June.

Famous River Crossings

The dramatic river crossings, where zebras and wildebeests face the threat of large crocodiles, typically occur in two areas:

  1. Grumeti River Crossings: West of the Moru Kopjes area in Central and Western Serengeti from mid-May to mid-June. This window is usually short, often lasting only 1-2 weeks and can be hard to predict.

  2. Mara River Crossings: At the very far northwestern tip of the Serengeti, bordering on Maasai Mara, starting in late July/early August. These crossings can continue until late October when they return from Kenya to Tanzania's northeastern Serengeti. The majority cross from mid-August to mid-September, with the first crossing window lasting 3 to 4 weeks. When they return in late September/early October, this window can also last about 3 weeks.

It is important to note that nature is unpredictable, and the timings of the migrations are driven by rain and grass availability, which can vary.

Lodges in key migration areas will do their best to locate the larger herds for you, often driving across large sections of the Serengeti based on recent ranger reports and radio communications

Expert tips

The Ngorongoro Crater, is a small section of the larger NCAA ( Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority). Its a lot less developed in terms of tourism, and the majority of the visitors, take a drive into the crater, for the day, with our safari vehicles. They would take a picnic lunch, and set it up at one of the main picnic sites in the park.

What stands out about Ngorongoro is the crater rim, which is basically a large ring of mountains, that stand towering above this valley, with herds of animals and a lake in the lower reaches.  In other words its more about the scenery, than the animals.

Day 9: Karatu

Start your day with an early breakfast at The Manor. You will then embark on a full-day tour of the Ngorongoro Crater, with a picnic lunch enjoyed within the crater itself. Return to The Manor for a relaxing dinner to end the day.
