Your all-inclusive safari will start at the Maun International airport where you will be greeted with a warm welcome by one of the friendly staff members. From there you will be escorted to a light aircraft for an amazing scenic flight to Xakanaxa airport.
Upon arrival you will be transferred on a luxury safari vehicle to your tented paradise in Moremi Game Reserve where your every need is catered for, with absolutely no compromise on indulgence. While refreshing welcome drinks are being served, the head guide will give you a short brief on what you can expect the next few days whilst on safari.
You’ll have time to unpack your clothes and then head out for your first game drive in the top-of-the-range 4×4 game vehicle with an expert guide, where you could experience some of the magic of the bush and see elephants, hippos, zebras, giraffes, lion, leopards and even the elusive wild dogs.
For the next three days you will get to experience the wonderland of waterways, floodplains, lagoons, woodland and savannah situated on the eastern edge of the Okavango Delta. With its diverse habitats one can expect a wide range of wildlife and a beautiful array of birds.
In the early morning you will be greeted with a “KOKO” (‘knock knock’ in Setswana) and a steaming mug of coffee, a light breakfast will be served. On your morning safari you can expect encounters with breeding herds of elephant, large herds of buffalo, Chobe bushbuck, Roan and Sable antelope.
Rhino were extinct in the Okavango, but both black and white rhino have been reintroduced in the reserve, although sightings are still rare. All the other Big Five are easily spotted – even the hardest to find, the leopard – are quite relaxed here. Wild dog sightings (a once in a lifetime experience) are some of the best in Africa. The best time to go to see this incredible creature is the middle of the dry season, when the area is most flooded, and food is plentiful, and you can find the dogs denning.
For those who enjoy birding, there are some 500 different woodlands and water birds. Moremi offers very good bird watching year-round, but the best time is during the wet months, from November to April, when summer migrants make the reserve their temporary home. Wildlife viewing is better during the dry months, from May to October, when the brush has died down and the animals are easier to view.
Having spent the morning exploring the surrounding wilderness in search of Botswana’s hidden treasures, you will return to camp for a hearty brunch. Just as animals retreat to escape the heat of midday, so will you. This is the time to enjoy reading, chatting, relaxing or taking a siesta.
Afternoon tea will be served before heading out again into the wilderness as the animals awaken from their resting places. As the day draws to an end, one can only marvel at the sheer splendour of African sunsets, and toast the wonders of nature with a gin and tonic, wine, beer or soft drinks.
On your return to camp, enjoy a hot shower under the starry night sky and gather around the warmth of the campfire to relive the day’s events and excitements. As night sets in, lanterns and candles are lit, and dinner is served under the African night sky with the bush as the backdrop to end a perfect day.
Retreating to the comfort of your tent after enjoying a night cap around the campfire whilst listening to tales from the guide, you can drift to sleep to the calls of the African wild.
You spend your days exploring the area on game drives and soaking up the African sun, enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of the bush.
On day four you will be treated to full day’s safari experience travelling along the Khwai River, mopane veld, woodlands and riverside habitats. A picnic style lunch, served under the shade of an Acacia tree.
The dedicated camp staff will ensure that all your luggage is safely transported to Khwai River camp where you will spend the next 3 nights.
We spend our days exploring the area on game drives and soaking up the African sun, enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of the bush.
The Khwai Community Concession borders the Moremi Game Reserve, being separated only by the Khwai River – the animals do not know the difference and most guides recognise that the game viewing is actually better outside the park! This concession is extremely productive for predator viewing and it is a popular “go-to” place to observe wild dogs.
Khwai is part of the Okavango Delta and so is influenced by the annual flood cycle of the Okavango River. Permanent swamps and rivers upsteam overflow, fed by the annual flood pulse from Angolan rain, to inundate the Khwai River. This sustains the life here, renewing the nutrient cycle. The water in fact, arrives in the lower reaches of the Delta in the “dry season” – between June and August. This “flood” is different from the local rains that fall in the delta between November and March! Game viewing is productive in both seasons (so all year).
Today is your last game drive. Upon your return to the camp you will enjoy a light brunch before you set off the airport where you will say “see you soon” to your guide, knowing you will long for the bush under the African sky. Your departure point back home on this trip will be from Maun International Airport.
