Day 3: Huab River Valley

This morning after breakfast, you will have a private  transfer to Eros Airport (approx. 1 hour).  You will be met by your pilot guide and depart at 10:00AM by light aircraft on a scenic flight to land at Sossusvlei to view the dunes for +- 2 hours.  After departing Sossusvlei, we veer westwards, aiming for the coast and the wreck of the Eduard Bohlen, a ship that ran aground in September 1909. This relic from the past is still fairly intact since it lies relatively far inland and is thus less exposed to the forces of nature. From here we turn northwards, following the contours of the coastline to Swakopmund, while passing over migratory seals& another shipwreck, the Shawnee, which stranded in 1967. We land at Swakopmund to refuel and enjoy lunch, and then proceed further north up the coast towards our Kuidas Camp, where you will stay for two nights.

Located on Skeleton Coast, in the Huab River Valley, on a rocky bluff overlooking the sparse and intensely beautifully moon-like landscape of Damaraland, Kuidas Camp is the first of the Skeleton Coast Safari's fly-in camps.

Environmentally conscious, and constructed from local woods and reeds, Kuidas consists of a shared area and four sleeping rooms. With just a seating area, lounge and decking, the mess area is serviced by a bush bar, and evenings are spent around a campfire. The food - daytime buffets and group meals - is good, and the wine excellent. Given that guests book as a group - or family - the atmosphere is homely, fun and familial.

Like the shared area, the sleeping rooms are a no frills affair. Decent, clean and well looked after, each is characterised by twin beds, a vanity mirror, a chemical toilet (the main toilets are housed in a separate building) and a small viewing area. Hot water and toiletries are provided by Kuidas Camp.

Day 4: Huab River Valley

Enjoy and early breakfast before  meeting with your driver guide and heading out in your Land Rover for the Ugab Formations, an impressive geological feature that is well worth a visit. On the way we pass the Gai-Ais Spring - where we have a good chance of encountering animals - and visit an ancient human settlement.  We then head off to view a petrified forest and enjoy a picnic lunch. From there we drive further south to take a closer look at the intriguing Ugab Formations.  Return to camp in time for dinner and overnight.

Activities include desert excursions, sundowners, game and bird viewing, guided walks and star gazing. Please note that Kuidas Camp is remote, is accessible by air, and is normally a part of an itinerary that includes two or more of Damaraland's camps. As a result, guests need to be prepared for a hardy, tiring but highly rewarding trip.

Day 5: Skeleton Coast

After an early breakfast you will explore the camp environs on foot to view samples of petroglyphs & rock paintings left by the same tribe that crafted the rock paintings & engravings at Twyfelfontein. We also look at the geological rock formations in and around the area. After lunch we pack our bags and Fly to Terrace Bay, from where we visit the roaring dunes, an awe-inspiring phenomenon created by sand sliding down the leeward slopes. We then Fly to Leylandsdrift  where you will stay for two nights. Enjoy your evening.

Leylandsdrift Camp is accessible through the Schoeman's company, Skeleton Coast Safaris. In May 2011, Leylandsdrift Camp was built to replace the original camp used by the Schoeman’s in this area; Purros Camp. Bordering the Skeleton Coast National Park, the camp is approximately 19 km west of the original Purros Camp. Leylandsdrift Camp is found in the heart of Kaokoland (Kunene region) about 40 km from the village of Purros (Puros) itself. Being located on the banks of the ephemeral Hoarusib River, Leylandsdrift has great views over the river valley that is frequented by a variety of species including desert adapted elephant, a small lion population and more recently a small number of trans-located black rhino. Rhino sightings are rare but tracks can be spotted in the river clay.

The design of the camp is pretty simple; however it is comfortable and well equipped. Meals are served in the small central area and drinks are enjoyed around the warming evening fire. Each new tent is raised up on a wooden deck and enjoys dramatic views down the valley.

Day 7: Kunene

After breakfast, you will head off to explore the stunning scenery in the surroundings, with some luck encountering an elephant or two on the way. We return to camp for lunch, then pack our bags and embark on a scenic flight to land on the banks of Namibia's northern border with Angola, the Kunene River. From the airstrip we undertake a scenic drive to our Kunene camp where you  will stay for one night.

Kunene River Camp is accessible through the Schoeman's company, Skeleton Coast Safaris. With mountains, sand dunes and vast gravel plains all around – visitors get a true feeling of the enormity of the place and also of its complete and utter isolation. Meanwhile, mysterious 'fairy circles' etched onto the gravel plains add a magical ecological puzzle.

The camp is set at the northern end of the Hartmann Valley, by the beautiful Kunene River, which acts as a natural boarder between Namibia and Angola. The lush banks of the Kunene contrast starkly with the surrounding desert – and are havens for diverse wildlife.

Kunene Camp has dome tents covered with a reed and has proper twin beds with neutral bed linen. The tents also have a bedside table, battery powered lamp, bottled water and tissues. There is also a small area in front of the tent where one gets great views of the surrounding scenery.

The dining area at Kunene River Camp is constructed from local materials – stone, wood and reed - and is covered, but open at the front and partially at the sides, giving great views along the Kunene River and across to Angola.
