Ecuador birding: southern highlights 2026

Upon arrival in Guayaquil, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is free to relax after your journey, allowing time to rest, acclimatize, and prepare for the adventure ahead. Depending on arrival time, you may choose to explore the city independently, enjoy the hotel facilities, or simply unwind and recover from your travels. Overnight in Guayaquil.

An early start this morning as we depart Guayaquil and head south into the Buenaventura area, one of the most important reserves for southwest Ecuador birdlife. Upon arrival at Umbrellabird Lodge, spend a full day birding along forest trails and at strategically placed feeders. This area is renowned for its rich biodiversity and offers excellent chances to observe a wide variety of lowland and foothill species. Overnight at Umbrellabird Lodge.

Today we venture out on a birding excursion to the nearby Cerro de Arcos Reserve. This protected area offers different habitats and elevations, increasing the diversity of species encountered. After a full morning on the trails, return to Umbrellabird Lodge for further birding around the feeders or time to relax. Overnight at Umbrellabird Lodge.

After breakfast, we transfer south to the Jorupe area, a prime location for observing Tumbesian endemics. En route and upon arrival, enjoy birding on local trails and at the lodge feeders, where several specialty species are frequently seen. This dry forest ecosystem is unique and highly productive for birding. Overnight at Urraca Lodge.

A full day dedicated to birding at and around Urraca Lodge. Explore surrounding trails and feeding stations, focusing on the many endemic and near-endemic species that inhabit this region. The combination of dry forest habitats and well-maintained access makes for excellent photographic and observation opportunities. Overnight at Urraca Lodge.

This morning we depart the lowlands and travel east toward the Andes, ascending into cooler climates as we make our way to Tapichalaca. Upon arrival at Casa Simpson, take time to settle in and enjoy initial birding opportunities around the lodge and nearby trails. Overnight at Casa Simpson.

A full day exploring the Tapichalaca area, famous for its pristine cloud forest and exceptional bird diversity. Head out early in search of the endemic Jocotoco Antpitta, along with many other Andean specialties. Birding takes place along forest trails and feeding areas, offering outstanding chances for close encounters. Overnight at Casa Simpson.

After breakfast, transfer from Tapichalaca down into the lush eastern foothills toward Copalinga Lodge. In the afternoon, enjoy birding at the lodge feeders, along the entrance road, and on nearby trails, where a mix of cloud forest and Amazonian species can be found. Overnight at Copalinga Lodge.

Today is dedicated to birding the excellent trail system within Podocarpus National Park. This protected area is known for its high species diversity and well-preserved habitats. Spend the day exploring different elevations and forest types before returning to Copalinga Lodge in the afternoon. Overnight at Copalinga.

Depart Copalinga and travel south to the Huashapamba Alto-Andine Forest Reserve near Saraguro. Enjoy birding in this high-altitude forest, which hosts a variety of Andean species. Afterward, continue the journey to the colonial city of Cuenca, where you will check in and enjoy the evening at leisure. Overnight in Cuenca.

A final day of birding takes us to El Cajas National Park, exploring its paramo landscapes and high-altitude forests. This dramatic setting offers a chance to observe species adapted to cold and open environments. In the afternoon, we continue our journey onward to Guayaquil. The tour ends after breakfast with a transfer to the airport for your onward journey.
