Silent Desert & Stormy Seas

No need to wait, dive straight into the essence of Namibia. The Auas mountain range hugs the southern fringes of the capital, but here the city seems far off, giving way to bush savannah prolific in game, bird life and plant diversity. Dinner is served under the stars to the sound of nature.

Rehoboth is a town as quirky as its people, who call themselves the Basters and that with much pride. Decedents primarily of early Dutch settlers and native Khoi, they have a rich and diverse heritage. Donkey carts steered by cheerful peasants transporting families and possessions are a typical means of transport and common sight. The escarpment of the Namib Naukluft Mountain range steeply leads into the golden lowland of the Namib Desert.

Namib Naukluft Park, a magnificent desert wilderness of vast dunes, clay pans and petrified forests. Early in morning as night gives way to the rising sun, shadows are cast onto the dune recesses, highlighting the tapered contours of the red dunes. Those who endure and ascend one of these giants are afforded with views stretching out far beyond the eye can see. Historically an important water source for the Dorstland Trekkers, Sesriem Canyon seems unassuming, somewhat non-existent, until looking down into its depths.

It is hard to believe that the barren plains of the Namib, pelted by the heat of the unyielding sun and unrelenting winds anything can survive. Yet, a single Welwitschia mirabilis plant is known to reach an age exceeding millennia, providing shelter and refuge to a myriad of other desert organisms. Meanwhile, one could assume to have arrived on the moon. Millions of years of erosion has carved mountains, gullies and canyons so surreal it seems out of this world. And suddenly land gives way to water as the desert tapers into the Atlantic Ocean. Swakopmund, wedged between the two opposing elements, is as eclectic as its weather.

Connection of Northern Route

Swakopmund with its swaying palm trees in verdant gardens, wide streets and old German architecture seems to be somewhat out of place and out of time. Taking a stroll around its town centre coffee and food lovers, craft shoppers and culture enthusiasts will revel in the variety bistros, book shops and galleries offer. Also a springboard for exciting day trips, visitors to Swakopmund are spoilt for choice. As the sun prepares to retire for the day the group convenes on the beach or the dunes.  While relishing snacks and drinks we bid farewell to some members of the group, welcome new additions or just savour the moment.
