Day 2: Berlin

Berlin City Sightseeing - City West

After a good night's sleep and a hearty breakfast, it is time to get out and explore the wonderful German Capital.
Meet your local guide in reception, and head out on a tour of the former West-Berlin.  Learn about the city's turbulent history on a 3-hour tour.

Start the tour on the iconic Kurfürstendamm, before continuing through Berlin's Green Lung, the Tiergarten. Once the hunting grounds of the aristocracy, today a popular park for locals and visitors alike. Drive past the famous Victory Column, see the presidential Palace, the House of World Cultures (also known as the Pregnant Oyster or Jimmy Carter's Smile) and wind up at the center of German politics - the Reichstag building.
From there, the tour takes you past the world-famous Brandenburg Gate, the number one symbol of the German division. Continue past the Holocaust Memorial, a confronting memorial to the millions of Jewish victims of the Holocaust.  At Potsdamer Platz, there is not much left of the desolate area of the times of the Cold War. Today modern buildings, skyscrapers, shops, and restaurants fill the area.

End the tour at the Palace of Charlottenburg. If you have time, perhaps check out the royal chambers after lunch?

We suggest lunch with beer tasting at lovely Lemke's am Schloss. Serving traditional beers and pork knuckles, Lemke's is a great choice after a morning filled with impressions and sights!

Return to the hotel or spend time in the palace grounds after lunch. The rest of your day is at your own leisure.

Day 3: Berlin

Berlin City Sightseeing - City East

Between 1961 and 1989, a 160 km long wall surrounded West-Berlin in order to "keep the fascists out of the GDR".  30 years ago, the Wall fell and Berlin once again became a united city. Today's tour takes you through the former eastern parts of the capital. Listen to stories about the division and what it did to the families of Berlin that were separated by the wall, the dramatic escape attempts and life in the communist GDR.

Start at the Berlin Wall Memorial at Bernauer Strasse, where heart-wrenching personal stories took place and the authorities simply bricked up the windows and made residential buildings a part of the Berlin Wall. Continue to the famous Friedrichstrasse with its "Palace of Tears", one of the busiest border crossings from east to west. Here friends and families said goodbye when returning to the West, or GDR citizens leaving the state forever. Painful goodbyes between friends and families who never knew when they would see each other again.

Experience Checkpoint Charlie, the iconic crossing between East and West, the boulevard Unter den Linden, with its State Opera House, the amazing History Museum, the Museum Island and Berlin Cathedral. The Alexanderplatz with its imposing TV-Tower is a sight not to be missed.

We suggest lunch in the area of Checkpoint Charlie, where Maximillians serves up a storm of traditional food every day! If you like it more modern, Oxymoron at Hackescher Markt is also worthwhile a try.

After lunch, spend time at leisure or hop on the Stern und Kreis boat at the Berlin Cathedral and see the sights from the water. The perfect spot to end another informative day exploring Berlin!

Expert tips

  • Extend your tour and check out the Berliner Unterwelten and see a former air-raid shelter and the interesting Germania-exhibition.
  • Spend time at the Hackesche Höfe with its beautiful courtyards featuring little shops and restaurants, once home to a thriving Jewish community.
  • For the longest stretch of the Berlin Wall that is still standing, head to Friedrichshain where the East Side Gallery stretches 1,3 km along the river Spree.
