Day 2

Laikipia

Day notes

Breakfast at the lodge.

Northern Kenya helicopter excursion -6hrs helicopter flight departing from Segera - low level from Laikipia - Silali Crater - Hoodoo and Painted Valleys - South shore Turkana - Ndoto's/Matthews forest – returning to Segera

-Based on max 5 persons capacity on Eurocopter B3

Helicopter through some of Northern Kenya’s most exciting and diverse landscapes. From the wildlife savannahs of Laikipia, through the extraordinary Suguta Valley, characterised by incredible eroded rock formations, floodpans and sand dunes. To the southern shores of Lake Turkana - wild in character, remote in nature and vastly unexplored. Touching down on the summit of the Mathews Range - an island of forest in a sea of desert.

Trip will take in:

-Laikipia is one of the most exciting wilderness and wildlife places in Africa. Abundant wildlife, spectacular scenery and extraordinary cultural diversity, in a setting dominated by the iconic backdrop of Mount Kenya.

-Silale crater - The first stop is to this vast caldera, carpeted by grasses and shrubs

- Suguta Valley on the equator - its highest peak ‘Batian’ stands at 5,199 meters.

The snowy peaks can be seen on clear days from as far as Mt Kilimanjaro some 300 km away.

The vast and desolate nature of Mount Kenya with its towering summit, sheer cliffs and glaciers become apparent as we circulate above the peaks of Batian and Nelion.

Incredible scenic flight through the Suguta - a valley characterised by a flood pan dominated by green algae, seasonal streams and dramatic rock formations.

Geologists have long been fascinated with this region. They have studied ancient sediments, fossil remains, and

occasional artifacts, and pieced together the history of a lake that rose and fell multiple times over the past 18,000 years.

Painted Valley’

The ‘Painted’ Valley, as we call it, is a severely errorded valley, in all shades of red and brown.

-The Hoodoo Valley Characterised by the distinctive mushroom like eroded rock

formations.

-Flying over Lake Logipi, lying just 15km south of Lake Turkana 15km south of Lake Turkana A saline seasonal lake that lies at the southern end of Lake Turkana.

The lake is one of Kenya’s most important breeding grounds for the lesser flamingo

-Lake turkana Southern shore The world’s largest permanent desert lake, Turkana, is wild in character with its parched volcanic beaches, granite outcrops and lava flows. The lake’s shores have revealed some of the world’s oldest fossil finds, from dinosaurs to early Man, discovered by the Leakey family.

-Mathews range - Ancient cycad forest

Known as a ‘sky island’, the 150kmlong Mathews Range rises from the dry desolate country exposing lush forested hills and craggy peaks. Natural springs and rivers flow through the valleys, and sacred sites of the Samburu lay hidden for feasting and dancing ceremonies. Amongst ancient cycads, with a birds eye view of the endless plains and wide skies, we land to enjoy this unique spot

Following helicopter excursion returning to Segera.

Time to relax at the lodge, make use of facilities.

Time permitting or if still wanting further activities this day departing with vehicle for safari with 4x4, where game activities can include off road game drives, night drives and game walks, camel treks, picnics, bush meals, sundowners, as well as village visits.
