The Kalahari is a vast semi-arid savanna stretching across Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. Characterised by its striking red sand dunes, open grasslands and camelthorn trees, it supports an abundance of wildlife and birdlife despite its dry climate.

The name Kalahari is derived from the Tswana word meaning "the great thirst" or "a waterless place". Although often referred to as a desert, it receives seasonal rainfall that transforms the landscape, making it one of southern Africa's most unique and beautiful wilderness areas.

Today you journey south to the spectacular Fish River Canyon, the largest canyon in Africa and one of Namibia's most impressive natural wonders.

Kolmanskop Ghost Town – Just outside Lüderitz lies the abandoned diamond-mining town of Kolmanskop. Once a thriving settlement during the diamond boom of the early 1900s, it is now a fascinating ghost town where sand-filled buildings tell the story of Namibia's mining past. Please note: Kolmanskop closes at 13:00, and it is recommended to purchase entrance tickets online in advance.

Experience the magic of Sossusvlei on a guided excursion through the iconic Namib-Naukluft National Park. An early morning departure is recommended to enjoy cooler temperatures and the spectacular golden light, ideal for photography. A breakfast pack can be arranged to enjoy along the way.

Sossusvlei is famous for its towering red sand dunes, some of the highest in the world, surrounding the striking white salt and clay pan. Nearby, Deadvlei offers one of Namibia’s most photographed landscapes, with ancient camelthorn trees standing against the white pan floor. A visit to Sesriem Canyon, carved by the Tsauchab River over millions of years, is also highly recommended.

A Sundowner Drive is another optional experience, offering the opportunity to enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the Namib Desert as the landscape glows in the evening light.

Sights En Route from Sossusvlei to Swakopmund

Solitaire – A famous desert stopover on the edge of the Namib-Naukluft National Park. Enjoy fresh coffee, the legendary apple pie, homemade snacks and refreshments while taking a break from your journey.

Gaub & Kuiseb Passes – Experience dramatic changes in scenery as the route crosses rugged mountain passes, ancient rock formations and vast desert landscapes. The Kuiseb River marks a striking contrast between towering sand dunes to the south and barren rocky terrain to the north.

Tropic of Capricorn – Stop at this iconic landmark where travellers can pause for a memorable photo opportunity along one of the world's important lines of latitude.

Walvis Bay – Located south of Swakopmund, this coastal town is famous for its spectacular lagoon, home to thousands of seabirds, including flamingos and pelicans. The area offers beautiful coastal scenery and is the starting point for many marine excursions.

Located on the banks of a sidearm of the Aba Huab River, Malansrus Tented Camp offers an authentic yet comfortable wilderness experience in the heart of Damaraland. Surrounded by Mopane trees and dramatic granite koppies, the camp provides easy access to the highlights of the Twyfelfontein area.

Today you journey through Etosha National Park, one of Southern Africa’s most iconic wildlife destinations. The park is centred around the enormous Etosha Pan, a vast white salt flat visible from space and surrounded by grasslands and woodlands that attract an abundance of wildlife.

As you cross the park from west to east, keep your eyes open for elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, antelopes and many other species gathering around the numerous waterholes. Etosha is renowned for its excellent game viewing and is one of Namibia’s most accessible national parks.

Your stay is at Onguma Aoba Lodge, located on the eastern boundary of Etosha National Park within the 34,000-hectare Onguma Nature Reserve. Meaning “the place you don't want to leave”, Onguma offers a tranquil setting overlooking a waterhole, with comfortable accommodation, a swimming pool, bar, lounge and dining area. Today marks the end of your Namibian adventure. After breakfast, depart from Otjiwa and make your way to Hosea Kutako International Airport for your onward flight.

The drive to the airport takes approximately 3.5 hours, so please allow sufficient time for your journey and the return of your rental vehicle. We recommend arriving at the airport at least 2 hours before your scheduled international departure.
