Day 1: Arenal Volcano National Park

Upon arrival to Liberia, Costa Rica, a private transfer will be provided to your hotel near the Arenal Volcano. Overnight at the Springs Resort & Spa

Arenal volcano was the most spectacularly active in Costa Rica. For 30 years hotels in the region touted their views of the lava flows and red hot boulders ejected from the volcano glowing in the darkness.

For the past ten years the red hot lava has been biding its time and the activity at Arenal has been limited to puffs of steam and a few deep rumbles.  No one can predict when this quiet cycle will end and the glowing red orange cone will once again dominate the night sky but even when it’s not erupting spectacularly the peak is still an imposing and beautiful sight.

There’s always a chance that clouds will obscure the top of the volcano but volcano but if you stick around a couple of days taking advantage of some of the other attractions in the area you’re likely to also get great volcano views.

There are also activities that you can enjoy completely free, such as walks around the town, visit crystalline rivers or visit Lake Arenal, and if you rent a bike, you can take a ride through different towns near La Fortuna such as El Castillo or La Guaria. Finally, your vacation in La Fortuna Costa Rica will not be complete, if you do not visit the Arenal Volcano Hot Springs.

Tonight, dinner is on your own. You may enjoy a quiet evening meal at the hotel or adventure yourself to downtown La Fortuna for more local flavour and authentic restaurants.

Day 6: Guanacaste

Days at leisure to enjoy the community of Las Catalinas.

Las Catalinas truly is a paradise for a wide range of outdoor activities!  Here are some of them:

  • Boogie Boarding and Body Surfing
  • Kayaking and Stand Up Paddleboarding
  • Hiking and trail running
  • Mountain Biking
  • Snorkeling

Swimming – The beaches of Las Catalinas are named Playa Danta nd Playa Dantita, and they are great for swimming.  At low tide Danta (the larger of the two) is very broad and with a flat pitch.  Waves are generally of moderate or smaller size, and break gently.  Currents are minimal.  This makes for good safe swimmingconditions for people of all ages.  There are rocks in some places, and areas that are rock free.  So be aware of that.  At high tide the beach is narrow and steeper and the waves break closer to shore.  More serious swimmers will want to swim out to the Islas Pitahayas, located about a kilometer offshore.

Yoga and Exercise Classes – we have regularly scheduled yoga and exercise classes in our beachside pavillion

Other great outdoor activities are conveniently located nearby and make for great outings from Las Catalinas:

Surfing – there are many world class surfing spots located near Las Catalinas.  The swell here comes generally from the south.  So Las Catalinas is partially sheltered from that swell by the point of Cabo Vela.  Just around the corner, a 25 minute drive from Las Catalinas, is the famous surfing beach Playa Grande.  Keep going south and there are a string of many more great surfing spots.  To the north, best reached by boat, are the famous Witch’s Rock and Ollie’s Point.  Surfing outings are very popular for Las Catalinas ♣ residents and visitors.

Sailing -The excellent Costa Rican Sailing Center is located in Potrero, just a few minutes’ drive or a bike ride away.  They have a whole fleet of new fast boats and expert instruction.  Bahia Potrero is a wonderful place to sail, with good sailing to be had nearly every day.  The water is warm and clear. There is lots of marine life including dolphins, whales, manta rays, and abundant turtles.  The coast is some of the most beautiful you will ever see.  There are also a variety of larger charter boats available in the area.  Afternoon sailing, snorkeling and sunset viewing trips are very popular outings from Las Catalinas.

Fishing – The waters off of Las Catalinas offer some of the finest deep sea fishing in the world.  There are a large number of local boats available for hire.  Marlin, sailfish, dorado, roosterfish, and tuna are among the local fish to be caught.
