Day 5: Liwonde National Park

Today you will be transferred to the Shire River where you will be met by the Kuthengo Camp staff and transferred via boat to your home for the next four nights.

You will settle into your room on arrival and rest. That afternoon you will be taken on your first game drive to explore the wildlife of Liwonde National Park. After your activity, you will be brought back to the camp in time to freshen up before enjoying an al fresco dinner and campfire stories.

Kuthengo Camp is nestled among Fever trees and Baobabs on an open plain stretching towards the Shire River in Liwonde National Park. Guests stay in four spacious and modern safari tents which are all en-suite with a bathtub and an outdoor shower and a private deck from where the herds of waterbuck that frequent the camp area can be observed in the evenings.

Day or night game drives are offered in open-top game-viewing vehicles, and guests can go on walks through the national park, led by knowledgeable guides and escorted by an armed National Park scout. Boating on the lagoons is a special treat which can be enjoyed from the end of December to early April.

All meals, local drinks, scheduled activities, and park fees are included.

Days 6 - 8: Liwonde National Park

Enjoy three full days in Liwonde National Park!

Up bright and early in the morning for your activity, choose from game drives, walking safaris or boating safaris! After your activity, hop in the swimming pool or do some birding on your private deck before lunch. After lunch, why not have a siesta or read a book by the pool before your evening activity. Game drive and dinner and a good night's sleep lay ahead.

Liwonde National Park, although fairly small in comparison to the rest of Malawi’s Wildlife parks, is a very popular park to visit. Wildlife includes large numbers of elephants, buffalo, hippos and crocodiles as well as kudu, sable and bushbuck. Predators include lions, cheetahs and hyena. It also has an impressive variety of birds.

Day 9: Nyika National Park

This morning you will rise and will be transferred to the Liwonde Airstrip for your private charter to Nyika National Park. From the airstrip here you will be met by your guide from Chelinda Lodge to transfer you to the beautiful Chelinda for the next 3 nights of your trip.

Compared to the ‘Scottish highlands’ in Africa, Nyika National Park is home to plenty of plains game, hyena and even the occasional lion and leopard. The park is fabulous for walking safaris, cycling, fly fishing in the numerous freshwater dams and is famed for its spectacular birdlife, like the bar-tailed trogon.

After a day of exciting activities, spend the evening curled up in front of the roaring fire and enjoy a sumptuous three-course meal before retiring to your cosy cabin for a bath in the claw-foot bathtub and enjoy the flames in your own fireplace.

All meals, local drinks, scheduled activities, and fees are included.

Days 10 - 11: Nyika National Park

Explore this beautiful region over the next two days, enjoying day and night drives, mountain biking, hiking, and fly fishing. This area is excellent for viewing plains game, hyena, side-striped jackal, warthog, and occasionally leopard. Birders will be delighted to know that it is home to 400 species!

Day 12: Likoma Island

Today you will be transferred back to the Nyika Airstrip for your charter flight to Likoma Island on Lake Malawi. You will stay here for the last three nights of your tour. Settle into your stunning chalet at Kaya Mawa and enjoy a gentle dip in the warm waters of the lake before a well-deserved siesta.

On the white sandy beaches of Likoma Island sits Kaya Mawa, a boutique lodge that welcomes honeymooners, families and friends for an indulgently carefree getaway.

Meaning ‘maybe tomorrow’ in Chichewa/Nyanja, the ethos of Kaya Mawa is in its name. Relaxed lakeside living is woven into the style, luxury and comfort of its Houses and Rooms. Dinner by starlight, massage therapy at our spa, and snorkelling in turquoise waters – it’s just another blissful day at Kaya.

Built by local hands and as Malawi’s first resort run solely on renewable energy, Kaya Mawa is firmly grounded in sustainability, community empowerment and ethical trade.

All meals, local drinks, and many activities are included.

Days 13 - 14: Likoma Island

Two full days to relax and enjoy Lake Malawi!

Take advantage of all the exciting water-based activities like kayaking, paddle-boarding, snorkelling, scuba or a sunset cruise. A must-see is St Peter’s Cathedral. Said to be the same size as Winchester Cathedral. Its stained-glass windows, crumbling masonry and sheer scale are testament to the zeal of its missionary creators’ religious conviction. Another place to visit is the Katundu workshop. Entirely run and managed by local women, they create stunning homewares from recycled products found on the island included their famous tumbled-glass chandeliers.

Day 15: End of Itinerary

Today you will wave goodbye to Malawi for now. You will be transferred back to Likoma Airstrip where you will be flown back to Lilongwe International Airport for your flight home.

Please note that Malawi combines very well with Zambia, so if you want to see the best of both worlds, let us know!
