Kruger National Park

Kruger Park is South Africa's most exciting African safari destination. Steeped in legend and history, the park is waiting for you to explore its vast landscapes and spectacular African wildlife. Where nearly 2 million hectares of unrivaled diversity of life forms melt with historical and archaeological sights - this is real Africa and offers a wildlife experience that ranks among the best in Africa.

South Africa’s premier safari destination, Kruger, throws up some staggering statistics. Established in 1898, it extends over 19,000 sq km (7,335 sq mi). It supports a total of 147 mammal species (the largest of any African national park), including an estimated 13,000 elephants, 40,000 buffalo, 2000 lions, and more rhinos than any other protected area. Kruger is an ideal safari destination at both ends of the price and experiential spectrum. No other major African park is so well geared towards budget-conscious self-drivers. Equally, some of the all-inclusive private and concession lodges associated with Kruger and its immediate environs – among them Mala Mala, Sabi Sabi, and Londolozi – rank among the most exclusive, prestigious, and costly in Africa.

Franschhoek Wine Farms

Characterized by towering oaks, rolling vineyards, Cape Dutch architecture and French flair, Franschhoek dates back to 1688, when 150 Huguenots arrived in the region, armed with winemaking skills (and a throng of other attributes that contributed irrevocably to the course of our country’s history).

Heading into the valley, first-time visitors are often struck by how deep its Gallic roots run: from the French-named wineries, hotels, and restaurants to the Parisian-style café society lining the eminently walkable high street to the classic, elegant wines produced here.

According to Vignerons de Franschhoek, there are 45 wineries in the region, ranging from regal and rustic to big-name and boutique, one as beautiful as the next, all of which produce astonishingly good wines.

Leeu Estates

The Estates are located between the mountainside and the river, just minutes away from the village of Franschhoek. It occupies a central position amongst vineyards, landscaped gardens, and fynbos (indigenous vegetation) in the Franschhoek valley.

At the center of this working wine, the farm is the meticulously refurbished 19th-century Manor House and spacious cottages amount the gardens, oak trees, and vineyards. The hotel has a restaurant, a wine cellar, two guest lounges, an honesty bar, a spa, a gym, and a pool. The individually styled bedrooms and suites are filled with customized architectural detailing and tactile textures in calming color schemes. The luxury en-suite bathrooms have marble floors, double vanity tops, underfloor heating, heated towel rails, free-standing bathtubs, and/or generous showers.

Cape Town

A coming-together of cultures, cuisines, and landscapes, there's nowhere quite like Cape Town, a singularly beautiful city crowned by the magnificent Table Mountain National Park.

Natural Wonders

Table Mountain National Park defines the city. The flat-topped mountain is the headline act, but there are many other equally gorgeous natural landscapes within the park’s extensive boundaries. Cultivated areas, such as the historic Company’s Garden, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, and Green Point Urban Park, also make exploring the city a pleasure. Follow the lead of locals by taking full advantage of the abundant outdoor space: learn to surf; go hiking or mountain biking; tandem-paraglide off Lion’s Head; abseil off the top of Table Mountain – just a few of the many activities on offer.

Art & Design

Human creativity is also self-evident here – it's one of the things that made the city a World Design Capital in 2014. From the brightly painted facades of the Bo-Kaap and the bathing chalets of Muizenberg to the Afro-chic decor of its restaurants and bars and the striking street art and innovation incubators of the East City and Woodstock, this is one great-looking metropolis. The informal settlements of the Cape Flats are a sobering counterpoint. Still, these townships also have ambitious projects that put food from organic market gardens on tables, or stock gift shops with attractive souvenirs.

People & Culture

Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, and traditional African beliefs coexist peacefully in this proudly multicultural city. Given South Africa’s troubled history, such harmony has been hard-won and remains fragile: nearly everyone has a fascinating, sometimes heartbreaking story to tell. It’s a city of determined pioneers – from the Afrikaner descendants of the original Dutch colonists and the majority colored community to the descendants of European Jewish immigrants and more recent Xhosa (isiXhosa) migrants from the Eastern Cape. They all bring unique flavors to Cape Town’s vibrant melting pot.

Beyond the City

Wrenching yourself away from the magnetic mountain and all the delights of the Cape Peninsula is a challenge. Still, within an hour, you can exchange urban landscapes for the charming towns, villages, and rural estates of Winelands destinations, such as Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. Hermanus is a prime whale-watching location, and also a base from which to organize shark-cave diving. Further afield, the delights of the Garden Route unfold, with more inspiring scenery to be viewed on thrilling drives down the coast and over mountain passes.
