WALKING
Tumaren Camp specialises in walking safaris, and a genuine love for exploring on foot shines through in their approach. Walking allows you to tap into senses that often remain unengaged in a vehicle, creating a deeply immersive experience. Much like trying to understand a city from inside a car, the African bush can remain just out of reach without stepping into it. Walks give you the opportunity to stand before towering megafauna that are rare in today’s world, while also discovering the smaller creatures, plant life, and intricate ecosystems that make this part of Laikipia so special.
TRACKING
The Ndorobo trackers are renowned for their expertise and are considered among the finest on the continent. Tracking is an ancient human skill that has largely been lost in the modern world, yet it plays a key role in many of the walks you will take part in. You will often interpret the stories written in the soil by the animals that pass through the area. It is common to track predators, especially big cats, until you are able to catch a glimpse or even take a photograph.
ROCK CLIMBING
Rock climbing is an established part of the guiding activities. Using a top-rope system with securely drilled anchors, a variety of routes are available for both beginners and experienced climbers. Safety is a top priority, with high-quality equipment that is regularly replaced. Routes, gear, and techniques are routinely audited by certified climbing instructors to ensure the highest safety standards.
RIDING CAMELS
Camels are an integral part of many safaris here. In addition to being ridden, they carry snacks, water, and extra gear, adding comfort and convenience. They accompany walkers and provide support during mobile activities. Camel riding is especially popular with children, offering a welcome break when little legs get tired and allowing walks to continue in a relaxed and flexible way for families.
BIRDWATCHING
Eastern Laikipia is a haven for birdlife, with an extraordinary variety of species. You can spot birds typical of both lower, drier regions and higher-altitude areas, resulting in impressive diversity. Specialist bird guides are available and are delighted to accompany keen birdwatchers in search of the region’s unique and special species.
KIMANJO AND OLDONYO NYIRO MARKETS
Each week, the Kimanjo or Oldonyo Nyiro markets come alive as vibrant social gatherings. More than simple marketplaces, they are important community hubs where people reconnect, trade livestock, and access a wide range of services, from solar-powered barbers to traditional medicine. A visit offers insight into daily life, culture, and the social fabric of the region.
SCHOOL VISITS
Visits to local primary or secondary schools can be incredibly rewarding. Meeting students who show a strong enthusiasm for learning, often with limited resources, is both uplifting and inspiring. Interactions may include conversations with student clubs or discussions on topics linked to your interests or profession. Sometimes simple educational models or activities are shared, encouraging a relaxed, interactive, and mutually enriching learning experience.
FISHING
Kenya offers excellent fishing opportunities, and the guides are passionate anglers. Options range from catfish and barbel to more specialised side trips targeting species such as Nile perch, Mount Kenya trout, tigerfish, or even saltwater species. Whether you are experienced or completely new to fishing, the experience can be tailored to suit your interests.
ULTIMATE FRISBEE AND FOOTBALL WITH OL MOTIOK SCHOOL
Friendly football and Ultimate Frisbee matches are sometimes arranged with students from local schools. These games may take place during school visits or informally in open areas such as dry riverbeds. Sport creates a universal connection, and many travellers find these light-hearted matches to be among the most memorable and joyful moments of their time here.

This morning you will be transferred to Loisaba airstrip in time for the scheduled flight to Lewa.
On landing at Lewa airstrip, you will be met by your safari guide and transferred with a game drive en route to Lewa House.
Located at the very heart of the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Lewa House is set on top of a hill with extensive views over gentle rolling hills with Mount Kenya to the south and the rugged Mathews Range and the sacred mountain of Ol Olokwe to the north.
Established as a cattle ranch in 1922 - Lewa has always been managed with wildlife as a top priority. In 1995 the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (a non-profit organisation) was formed and in 2013 the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today there is minimal livestock on Lewa and the main focus of the conservancy is wildlife conservation together with community outreach programmes and development. Host to over 14% of Kenya’s Black Rhino population and over 12% of the global population of Grevy’s zebra, Lewa is one of the best places in the country to see both of these iconic animals. Wildlife abounds, with all of the Big Five and herbivores associated with the north of Kenya.

You spend the next two days exploring Lewa Conservancy. The main activity from Lewa House is game drives (by day and night) across the abundant Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, conducted in open vehicles, which are generally very productive.
Walking safaris are possible and take place in areas where vehicles seldom, or cannot, venture. It is also possible to walk with camels or have a go at riding these slightly uncomfortable creatures!
Horse riding is available across the plains for another different perspective with one ride usually being included within a three night stay.
Various community and conservation focused trips are also offered at Lewa house. These include visiting the Conservancy HQ to gain an insight into their conservation work and the challenges of poaching, the Lewa Anti-poaching bloodhounds where you are able to meet the rangers and see demonstrations of tracking, visit the indigenous Ngare Ndare Forest where you are able to swim in the river, visit waterfalls and the forest boardwalk.
There is a prehistoric site on the ranch where Acheulian hand axes can be found scattered on the ground. If you are interested, a visit to see the working side of the ranch and conservancy can be arranged.
