Expert tips:

Kanha National Park is most famous for being Rudyard Kipling’s inspiration to pen  ‘The Jungle Book’ . The terrain consists of lush sal and bamboo forests, grassy meadows and ravines. The Park's landmark achievement is the preservation of the rare hard ground Swamp Deer or the Barasingha, and hence saving it from near extinction. With a series of dedicated conservation programs, the overall protection of the Park's fauna and flora has made Kanha one of the most well-maintained National Parks in Asia.

Kanha Earth Lodge lies in 16 acres of natural forest, tucked away in a small tribal hamlet bordering Kanha’s buffer zone. It offers 12 open-fronted, luxury bungalows with en suite bathrooms and large verandahs that adhere to high standards of green architecture through their use of recycled, waste wood and local stone in all aspects of construction and furniture design. The Lodge has won several Indian and International awards for its high environmental standards.

Expert tips:

Pench National Park has been included under the umbrella of Project Tiger as the 19th Project Tiger Reserve. Located in the Seoni and Chhindwara districts of Madhya Pradesh it comprises of 758 sq. kms out of which a core area of 299-sq-km is the National Park and 464-km the buffer area of Southern Indian tropical moist deciduous forest mixed with tropical dry deciduous teak bearing forests and dry mixed deciduous forest. With the three types of forest a diversity of fauna abounds within this natural system. 39 species of mammals, 13 species of reptiles, 3 species of amphibians and over 170 varieties of birds have already been listed.

Pench Tree Lodge - Your luxurious abode in the jungle is perched on top of the Mahua trees and supported by stilts. Large French windows allow for an uninterrupted view of the deciduous forest and grassland and lets you observe the multitude of birds, butterflies and the wild animals at the lodge. Our guests have so far seen wild boars, civets, jungle cats, jackals and spotted deer as they sat sipping their morning tea or the evening sundowner on the private deck. Breaking away from the monotony of oft repeated safari lodgings, they have been designed with an eclectic mix of vintage and natural aesthetics.

Included:

  • Packed breakfast & lunch at Kanha.
  • Private road transfer to Pench Tree Lodge.
  • Dinner at Pench.

Day 6

Pench National Park

Day notes

Today, you have your cycling adventure option. After an early breakfast at the lodge, we drive (30 minutes) to Rukhad Wildlife Sanctuary and have the privilege to explore the sanctuary and it's surrounding forest and tribal villages by cycles. We will be accompanied by local park guide, and back up vehicle with trailer to carry cycles, or if you require a break.

(Note: This excursion will not be possible on a Wednesday as the park will be closed in the afternoon)

The ride through the forest along dirt roads is about 25kms (can be shortened). For the most part is even terrain and easy peddling. There are some steep ascents and descents at the beginning. It's a wonderful experience, with no other people about. There is a chance to see some wildlife, including sloth bears. Towards the end of the ride, you pass through remote rural villages and friendly people. It's a chance to get out of a vehicle and be active; there are many photographic opportunities, and you are with your knowledgeable naturalist guide all the way. At the end of the ride, a wonderful well earned lunch will be served at Sakata Forest Rest House,  a 1904 colonial bungalow.

Late afternoon drive back to the lodge en route, a optional visit to a local market and village school.

Early morning assemble for tea / coffee and then set off for a game drive into Pench National Park by open top 4WD exclusive jeep accompanied by English speaking lodge naturalist who sometimes is also the driver besides the local park guide.  Return to the lodge in time for lunch.

After an early lunch, you will be collected from Pench, for the drive to Satpura and Denwa Backwater Escape. Arrive in the late afternoon.

Expert tips:

Rukhad WLS is in the Pench / Kanha forest corridor, which is a part of the Satpura–Maikal landscape. This landscape is classified as a global-priority Tiger Conservation Landscape (TCL) due to its potential for providing sufficient habitat that will allow the long-term survival of tigers. Wildlife scientists have found that the tigers in the Satpura–Maikal landscape have high genetic variation and very low genetic subdivision so the chances of their long term survival is brighter in this region if the forest  corridors is intact and providing route for tigers to disperse. The other tiger habitats in India are fast becoming islands and there is little change in genetic pool of the tiger population.

By cycling through this corridor, you are providing funds for the long term success of  tiger habitats.

Included:

  • Breakfast, lunch (picnic) & dinner.
  • Full day cycling excursion.

With it's shimmering white marble domes and exquisite craftsmanship, the Taj Mahal is Agra’s pride and one of the world’s greatest monuments. Built in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz, the Taj is inlaid with black marble and semi-precious stones on its inside and outside, while the entire Koran is inscribed on the exterior of its main dome.

Note: Taj Mahal remains closed on Fridays

Return to the hotel for breakfast, and relax during the heat of the day.

In the afternoon, you will be collected by your guide for a visit to the impressive Red Fort, built by Emperor Akbar in between 1567 and 1573. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it encompasses an enormous complex of courtly buildings. Also visit small but elegant Itimad-ud-Daulah’s Tomb; lyrically described as a “jewel box in marble”. The tomb is a combination of white marble, coloured mosaic, stone inlay and lattice work. Stylistically, it is the most innovative 17th century Mughal building.

Later in the evening, cross the Yamuna River,  to view the Taj Mahal, and to experience the wonderful  reflections of the monument in the river.

The Interiors have been done tastefully with a lot of attention to detail. The suites are elegant and luxurious and have very interesting 19th century imprints of Rajput architecture by Sir Swinton Jacob.
