8-day Waterberg Long-stay Safari

Day 1: The Waterberg Biosphere

You will be met at Johannesburg airport and transferred to the malaria free Mabula Private Game Reserve. It is a 2-3 hours’ scenic drive. At the lodge, we are welcomed with drinks and lunch with a general bush briefing. After check in, our first safari departs. The afternoon safari is around 3 hours depending on what animals are seen. At sunset, we stop for sundowner drinks. After the sun has set on your first exhilarating day, return to the hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: The Waterberg Biosphere

Up early for a two-hour morning bird walk where you view game and more specifically birds while walking through the reserve. This activity gives you the opportunity to get closer to nature with the main focus being the South African birdlife. Breakfast is served at the lodge when back and you will have some time to relax, have lunch and enjoy the views and swimming pool before the afternoon lion tracking starts. You will use telemetry from an open safari vehicle to track the lions. In the evening, dinner is served around the fire in the open air Boma.

Day 3: The Waterberg Biosphere

Early up for a two-hour guided walk where the main focus is to track and view rhinos on foot. Breakfast and lunch back at lodge. In the afternoon, get close the animals in their natural environment on a horseback safari throughout the reserve.

Day 4: The Waterberg Biosphere

Morning safari.

In the afternoon, we go on another three-hour open vehicle safari in the reserve and learn the basics of tracking.

Sundowner drinks to be enjoyed while watching the sun set. After enjoying sundowners, you will make your way through to the nearby Mabula Game Lodge for dinner in the Ndlovu Boma where dinner is served around the fire in the open air boma.

Back at camp – stargazing - your ranger will show you the stars of the Southern Hemisphere.

Day 5: The Waterberg Biosphere

Early morning walk to Mvubu Dam, it’s a leisurely walk to the dam, situated not too far from Kwafubesi Tented Camp where you will enjoy a hearty breakfast overlooking the dam. This walk will last roughly 2 hours. Lunch back at lodge. In the afternoon, we visit the Hornbill project which takes approx. 3 hours and is combined with a shortened game drive. Today you will witness the great work done by the Mabula Ground Hornbill project to ensure the preservation of this critically endangered bird species. Dinner back at lodge.

Day 6: The Waterberg Biosphere

Early morning safari with coffee stop – it normally takes three hours and you view game from an open vehicle throughout the reserve. Coffee and rusks to be enjoyed while taking in the sounds of the awakening bush veldt. Breakfast is ready when you come back to the lodge. Relax and have lunch before your last afternoon safari – again we stop and marvel at the African sunset with sundowner drinks. Boma dinner around the fire in the evening.

Day 7: The Waterberg Biosphere

Enjoy one more early morning safari with a coffee stop catching the animals wake up. Breakfast back at lodge. Relax and have lunch before a specialised guided walk where the main focus is to track and view cheetahs on foot. Farewell dinner in the evening where we can share all our bush experiences.

Day 8: End of Itinerary

Leisurely morning and breakfast. After check out and lunch (depending on your flight departure time) we make our way back to Johannesburg to arrive at Johannesburg airport in time for your flight.
