Day 8: Torres del Paine National Park

Puma Tracking

You start your adventure driving directly to the land the pumas; Amarga ranch. Here our guide will greet you and give a short introduction of the day and what to expect. Then it is time to start the adventure!

Together with your tracker, you will divide the search into different areas of the ranch to cover more ground and thus be able to find a puma roaming its territory. The pumas are active early in the morning and late in the afternoon.

Around 5,000 hectares are left for the conservation of the wildlife and through years of observation, they have identified various “favourite places” of the pumas making it easier to find them. However, don't forget that they are wild animals and they do not control or feed them, and can't guarantee a 100% sighting.

Besides the puma, many other mammals can be observed here like the guanacos, foxes and skunks. This area is also interesting for birdwatching and landscape photography, with one of the best backgrounds of the famous three granite towers. Searching for pumas requires a mix between knowledge, luck and patience. You spend time, stopping, scanning the area with binoculars, listening for alarm sound of the guanacos, observing the flying scavengers like the condor or the Southern Caracara.
