12-Day Safari, Garden Route & Cape Town Self-drive Tour - Luxury - NETT

Days 1 - 3: Eastern Cape

  • On arrival at Port Elizabeth Airport, collect your rental car and travel to Amakhala Game Reserve, about 1 hour’s drive. Check in at Woodbury Lodge, spectacularly set against a cliff above the Bushman’s River Valley.
  • Amakhala Game Reserve is steeped in a rich conservation ethic that has been handed down over the generations. The reserve has a unique conservation initiative that allows animals to be re-introduced to the area where they once roamed freely and thus conserving our natural heritage.
  • This afternoon you have your first game drive in an open safari vehicle with ranger. Wildlife likely to be encountered during the game drives in the Game Reserve are: the "Big Five", lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and leopard as well as cheetah, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and plenty of antelope species.
  • During your 3 nights stay you have 6 game drives included, as well as all your meals. Optionally one game drive can be replaced by a river cruise on the Bushman’s River which is renowned for its birdlife.

Days 4 - 5: The Crags

  • Enjoy your last morning safari at Amakhala followed by a nice breakfast. Time to leave the bush behind…
  • Travel along the coast to Plettenberg Bay, with many interesting places en-route to visit such as the beautiful Tsitsikamma National Park.
  • Stay 2 nights at Lily Pond Country Lodge, situated in Nature’s Valley, a forestry area just outside Plettenberg Bay and a short drive to secluded beaches. It’s is a great base to explore the many things the area has to offer including visiting the Elephant Sanctuary or Monkeyland, the lagoon at Knysna with the Knysna Heads and Featherbed Nature Reserve 
  • Visiting Plettenberg Bay at any time of the year offers amazing ocean wildlife adventures too. But none more spectacular than the months the Southern Right Whale visits the quiet bay to nurture their young before migrating. During this time, going whale watching is an exhilarating experience. Learn more about these majestic animals and other animals in the region on an ocean safari or get up close and personal in a sea-kayaking trip.
  • If you love hiking, the Garden Route is definitely the place you need to visit. In the area there are many different hiking trails to take advantage of from easy, for beginners, to difficult, for more experienced hikers. The Robberg Nature Reserve is famous for its beautiful walks and amazing views.

Day 6: Oudtshoorn

  • Continue your journey on the Garden Route and stop at lovely Knysna, Sedgefield and Wilderness. Then travel inland over the Outeniqua Mountain Range to Oudtshoorn.
  • Oudtshoorn is known as the ostrich-capital of South Africa. Visit one of the ostrich farms and the impressive Cango Caves.

Days 7 - 8: Cape Winelands

  • Travel via the Route 62, the former main route connecting Port Elizabeth to the Cape and now dotted with charming little towns where time seems to have stood still. The Route 62 through the Karoo is also the longest Wine Route in the world and takes you through amazing, open landscapes.
  • Stay 2 nights at the lovely Evergreen Manor in Stellenbosch within walking distance of many restaurants, shops and many historical buildings.
  • During the 2 full days that you have in the area visit many award-winning wine estates and learn all about the art of wine-making including tasting sessions of the wines as well as other products such as olives and cheeses.

Days 9 - 11: Cape Town

  • Today you drive a very scenic route from Stellenbosch to Cape Town via the Cape Peninsula. Stop at Boulders Beach to visit the penguin colony and see the colourful beach houses at St James. From there you go to the most southern tip of the peninsula and visit Cape of Good Hope. The trip continues via Kommetjie and over the spectacular Chapmans Peak to Hout Bay. After a visit to this harbour you arrive at your hotel in Cape Town. 
  • The next 3 nights you will be staying at a central location in Cape Town, at The Three Boutique Hotel, with a great rooftop terrace looking at Table Mountain.
  • There is so much to do and to see in and around Cape Town. Visit the V&A Waterfront and book an excursion from there to Robben Island. Take the Table Mountain aerial cableway to the top and walk through the historic inner-city of Cape Town with the Company Gardens and SA Museum. You can explore Cape Town on the red hop-on-hop-off busses in your own time. Alternatively we can assist with guided excursions in town and to the townships.

Day 12: End of Itinerary

  • After a lovely time in the Western Cape of South Africa it is time to travel to Cape Town Airport, where you hand in your rental car and check in for your onward flight ( own arrangement)
