Day 4: Okavango Delta

Day 4 & 5

Okavango Delta

We continue to the famous Okavango Delta. The delta is one of the most wildlife-rich areas in Africa and is the largest inland delta in the world. The Okavango pours into the Kalahari Basin, forming many waterways lined with papyrus and palm trees. The islands in between are a paradise for wildlife and birdlife.

On the flight there, we can enjoy the spectacular view of the delta from above. On the Xudum side of the Okavango in the south-west of the Delta, lies Kanana Camp, a special natural paradise with many grass and palm-covered islands. We will spend two wonderful days here. We are accommodated in one of eight spacious, luxurious tents and even have the choice of spending the night under the open night sky on a special sleeping platform!

The camp is a water paradise and offers game drives and guided walks in addition to water activities. It is possible that we will see lions, hyenas or even a leopard very near by. We are booked in on a full inclusive basis, so all activities such as game drives in four-wheel drive vehicles, boat trips, mokoro (dugout canoe) trips and guided walks are included in the price.

Camp Okuti is situated on the northern edge of Moremi Park on the Maunachira River, a branch of the Okavango. We explore the area either in the lodge’s open safari vehicle or by boat. We see buffalo, giraffes, elephants and numerous smaller animal species. Of course, predators such as lions, cheetahs and the shy leopard also inhabit the area. Day 8 & 9

Savute area

We continue to the Savute Game Reserve, which lies south of the Linyanti River in the western part of Chobe Park. Up until 2010, the Savuti River held no water due to many years of drought. At present, it has dried up again, but thanks to the surrounding waterholes, there are still many animals to be seen in the area. The exclusive Savute Safari Lodge is located at the eastern end of the Savuti Channel. The waterholes in front of the lodge are illuminated at night, so we can watch the animals coming and going in the tranquil evening atmosphere. We spend two eventful days in this area in search of elephants, giraffes, waterbucks, lions, hyenas, cheetahs and many more.

In Kasane, we board the Chobe Princess houseboat. The houseboat affords us exceptional views of the wilderness from the water.

Numeous wildlife experiences await us on the Chobe river, as there are about 80 000 elephants, numerous hippos and thousands of buffalo in this area. The buffalo are usually only seen in the early morning or late afternoon when they leave the bush to quench their thirst at the river.
