Day 1: San Jose

Upon arrival into Costa Rica you will make your way through customs and immigration. After collecting your bags you will meet your representative (holding a sign bearing your name) where they will verify your travel documents before transferring you to your hotel. The drive from the airport to the hotel takes approximately  25 minutes.

After breakfast,  transfer to your next destination.

Day 7: La Fortuna

Embark on a private tour.

La Fortuna Waterfall is located near the Arenal Volcano National Park, in an area with ample annual rainfalls and temperatures between 65 and 95 F, producing an abundant vegetation and diversity. This beautiful waterfall has its sources in La Fortuna River and several of its affluent rivers. During this private tour, you will have the opportunity to experience an example of the beautiful Costa Rican cultural life along the way, cattle farms and agriculture. You may also have the chance to see some birds such as oropendolas and toucans.

After that, you will walk five hundred meters into the forest to get to the waterfall, which is 70 meters high. At the base of the waterfall there is a “natural pool” where you can swim in the fresh water of La Fortuna River for about one hour before getting back to your hotel. 

It is highly recommended to bring long pants, hiking shoes, bathing suit, towel, camera and binoculars.

Day 8: La Fortuna

The private tour begins once you get picked up at your hotel in La Fortuna. This walk is a fun and educational way to learn more about the forest and the local environment and enjoy the close contact with nature. While walking along the trails, the fascinating world of the tropical forest will open to you. Along these three kilometers of trails, you will be immersed in the diverse fauna and flora of this Rainforest admiring colorful birds. This site offers one of the most productive bird watching walks of the region and tropical plant species while your naturalist guide show you and explain everything you need to know about all the species.

It is highly recommended to bring comfortable clothing, long pants, hiking shoes (no sandals), sweater, raincoat (especially during green season), camera, binoculars, sunscreen and insect repellent.

Private Natural History Walk

Day 9: Santa Elena

This private service with guide, half tour – half transfer is a scenic and fast way to go from La Fortuna (Arenal Volcano Area) to the Monteverde area. You will be picked up from your hotel in La Fortuna for a 30 minute microbus drive to the Arenal Lake Dam. There you will board into a very comfortable and safe pontoon boat for a 30 to 40 minutes (approx.) ride to Río Chiquito, a little town at the other side of the lake.

Arenal Lake is the largest and the most important lake in Costa Rica, it was man made in 1974 to provide hydroelectric energy for the country. It is also a place where you can find different kinds of resident and migratory birds. Sometimes mammals can be seen in the surroundings, also great views of the Arenal Volcano when it’s clear. Once at Río Chiquito, you’ll leave the boat and make a short break to strength the legs; after that, another 1 1/2-hour microbus ride to get to the hotel.

Please note sometimes during the rainy season this transfer could take longer.

It is highly recommended to bring long pants, sweater, hiking shoes, sun lotion, repellent and raincoat, camera, binoculars.
