Day 2: Cape Town

After breakfast at the hotel you will be met by your guide in the hotel foyer at 08:15 for a Full Day Cape Peninsula Tour (from 08:30-17:00)

The tour includes:

Kirstenbosch Gardens:

  • All visitor facilities, i.e. entrance gates, restaurants, shops and venues, are wheelchair friendly
  • Kirstenbosch is set on a very steep gradient and not all areas of the garden are accessible to wheelchairs. The wheelchair friendly areas of the Garden include the central area between the Visitors' Centre (Gate 1) and the Centre for Home Gardening (Gate 2).
  • The Boomslang (tree-top walkway) is wheelchair accessible, with assistance, as the Arboretum is situated on a slope and quite far into the garden.
  • Wheelchair users are also advised to enter and exit the walkway via the eastern entry point as this is the shortest distance over mulch paths to and from the walkway.
  • Hourly golf cart tours of the gardens are offered from 09.00-15.00.

Cape Point:

  • There are parking bays for the mobility impaired at Cape Point.
  • The restaurant at Cape Point has a staggered access ramp that permits wheelchairs to move down the steep slope, the restaurant's lower deck overlooking False Bay has a particularly steep ramp and assistance may be required.
  • Wheelchair accessible toilet in the restaurant.
  • The Point's highlight is the funicular that takes people up the steep slope to a lookout point. This allows easy access to a wheelchair user (no wheelchair accessible toilet at the lookout point).

Boulders Beach:

  • A well-designed wooden boardwalk allows people with mobility impairment the opportunity to get right down to the penguin colony beach (Foxy Beach).
  • Ablutions for wheelchair users are available
  • A boardwalk ("Willis Walk") provides a firm surface for movement between the Visitor Centre and Boulder's Bathing Beach. This pathway is quite steep in places. A concrete ramp can be used to access the beach itself, although many will require assistance, as it is very steep.

Day 3: Cape Town

After breakfast at the hotel you will be met by your guide in the hotel foyer for a full day City Tour including Table Mountain and Robben Island.

Table Mountain:

  • A customer services assistant will help you to the lifts, which will get you to the Cableway docking level and the cable cars.
  • The Rotair cable car doors are wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair, and the viewing windows are low enough for you to watch the scenery as the car travels up to the Upper Cable Station.
  • There are lifts that will transport you from the docking station of the Upper Cable Station.
  • Both the Agama and Dassie walks are paved, making traveling in a wheelchair easy.
  • If you prefer to be accompanied by an expert, there are two guided tours each day. These guided tours are free of charge. They commence at 10h00 and noon every day, and depart from the meeting point just outside the Upper Cable Station.
  • The Table Mountain Café has wheelchair ramps and wide aisles, and disabled toilets are situated inside the café.

Castle of Good Hope

  • The castle is only partially accessible for wheelchairs. The entrance area is level, with small cobble stones.
  • Wheelchair accessible toilet at the entrance area.

Robben Island

  • The boat ride to and tour of the island are both wheelchair accessible
  • The docks on the mainland (V&A Waterfront) and on Robben Island are wheelchair accessible, via ramps. The ramps are steep, but dock personnel assist wheelchairs on the way down. Ramps are used to bridge the gap between the dock and boat, providing for an accessible and safe boarding experience.
  • The ship's upper deck and the interior passenger cabin on the lower deck are not wheelchair accessible. Wheelchair users will need to stay out on the exposed deck at the stern of the ship.
  • The high-floor buses are dated, but do have a wheelchair lift at the centre boarding door.
  • Once onboard, there is a dedicated wheelchair space on the right side of the bus. There are no securement straps, but the bus drives slowly and on paved roadways.
  • The wheelchair accessible bathroom is private, and can accommodate the wheelchair user and his/her assistant or carer.
  • When touring the prison there is a small problem as the threshold to the dormitory is a step of 4 to 5 inches- assistance may be required.
