Day 1: Punta Allen, Mexico

You depart the US this morning and will arrive Cancun International Airport before 3 pm. Upon arrival and after clearing immigrations/customs, you will be met by a Grand Slam Lodge transfer representative who will transfer you about an hour & half to just south of Tulum. Here you will meet the guides from Grand Slam Lodge and they will transfer you by boat about an hour to the lodge. You will arrive the lodge in time for happy hour and greetings.

Expert tips

Attire at the Lodge is casual all the time; we recommend lightweight cotton clothing in light colors. In the restaurant, please wear sandals/shoes, and shirts or T-shirts with sleeves for the men. Light jacket or fleece for evenings, which can get cool December through April. Remember, you can take advantage of the laundry service.

Days 2 - 4: Punta Allen, Mexico

You can choose to fish as little as two days or as many as six days.

Start your morning with a good breakfast, and head for the dock with your gear to start your assault on Ascension Bay fish. Eight hours of fishing per day (except arrival and departure days) are included in your stay package, typically running 8 am to 4 pm when the light is best for spotting fish. Good flats fishing is just minutes from the lodge; the best spots are a 20- to 45- minute boat ride.

All fishing in the biosphere reserve is catch-and-release. For fishing diversity we can range north to Boca Paila lagoon and south to Espiritu Santo Bay on request.

The 25-ft. fishing pangas are stable in the shallow flats, have a wide casting area on the flat bow, and a poling platform at the back for sighting fish. They easily slip through the canals in the mangroves to quiet lagoons where tarpon lurk. They’re outfitted with 40- to 60- hp engines to access remote spots in the bay and get you in quick when rain clouds loom. They also have comfortable seats, rod holders, gear and coolers.

Expert tips

Your package includes two anglers with their personal guides in each panga, but you can have your own boat for a half or full day if you like at an additional cost.

We recommend bringing lightweight, breathable, long sleeved shirts in neutral colors for your days fishing; those with vents, a collar and made of technical fabrics that block the sun’s UV rays are best. Long pants in neutral colors, made of lightweight, fast-drying fabric, or wading pants. Water sandals or non-slip boat shoes for the boat. Lightweight, waterproof rain jacket and possibly waterproof pants for boat spray or showers.

Light neoprene wading boots over the ankle with rubber sole designed for a sandy bottom. Tight fitting so your feet do not pull out underwater. You can insert athletic insoles for more arch support. Dive boots are also a comfortable option but often waders are too hot.

Day 5: End of Itinerary

No fishing is planned today as you will enjoy breakfast before settling your bar tab. Late morning you will bid farewell to the staff at Grand Slam and be transferred back to Tulum by boat then met your ground transfer representative for the transfer back to Cancun International Airport. This afternoon you will depart on a flight back home.  Your departure flight must be no earlier than noon due to the in country logistics.
