Day 3: Damaraland

Damaraland Camp is located in the Torra Conservancy exists within one of the driest, most desolate regions in all of Africa. In this arid environment the ceaseless processes of life revolve around harnessing the near non-existent water in the most economical way possible. The intermittent flow of ephemeral rivers such as the Hoanib and Haub, is vital in maintaining subterranean water supplies which feed the riverine vegetation.

Obviously this scrub landscape cannot support vast, concentrated herds of wildlife, but it nevertheless boasts a varied and breathtaking assortment of desert-adapted species. The Torra Conservancy supports healthy populations of rare desert-adapted elephant and some black rhino. Gemsbok (oryx), kudu, springbok, Hartman's mountain zebra, southern giraffe, lion, cheetah, and spotted and brown hyaena also live in the area. Birding is excellent, with over 240 species recorded.

Hoanib Valley Camp is located in the Sesfontein Community Conservancy, its joint partners in the area. The camp is set back in a hidden valley and surrounded by a range of jagged mountains, just outside the private 500 square kilometre Palmwag Concession. Views are of the ephemeral Hoanib River that teems with resident elephant, giraffe, oryx and springbok. Although parts of the land have been designated ‘concession areas’ tourism is still limited, making a visit to this unspoiled corner even more memorable.

You enjoy three nights at Hoanib Valley Lodge.

Days 5 - 6: Hoanib River

The wildlife of the Hoanib Valley is perfectly at home in the arid environment, and learning about their survival techniques is fascinating. Game drives will reveal desert-adapted elephant, as well as stately desert-adapted giraffe, and, if you’re very lucky, desert lion. Zebra, klipspringer and kudu move freely through the mountains, and you’ll find hardy herds of springbok and oryx, as well as steenbok picking their way across the dust-blown landscapes. The region is home to the largest population of free-ranging black rhino, and a day (or even a morning or an afternoon) tracking the magnificent beasts is an absolute must. Bird watchers, keep your eyes peeled for Monteiro’s hornbills or Ruppell’s korhaans in the valleys, and the imperious Verreaux’s eagle in the mountains.

Other activities include visits to the local Giraffe Conservation Foundation – this is a must as one of the camps partners, Dr Julian Fennesy is Africa’s foremost giraffe expert. Also on offer are cultural visits and experiences with the wonderful Himba and Herero tribes people.

The lodge itself if located between the Hoanib and Hoarusib rivers and area incredibly important with the conservation of not only the black rhino but black faced impala, elephant and the Hartmann’s mountain Zebra.
