Bush and Beach Safari to Mozambique - Dec 2022

Day notes

There are a few scheduled flights into Beira either from Johannesburg, Maputo or Addis Ababa. You will be met off the flight and then as soon as everyone together and sorted out we load up the helicopter for a low level flight along the coastal flood plains to Mungari camp which is about 90mins away.

During your time at Mungari we will have free range over the Concession so we can explore the whole area either on foot or by open safari vehicle, on and off road, at night or during the day. Each day we will work out what will work best, which areas we will want to look at and what species are of interest. Highlights here will include walking through the sand forests in search of some of the beautiful birds that are specials here like East Coast Alethe, Chestnut Fronted Helmet Shrike, African Pitta, Narina Trogon, Mangrove Kingfisher and many more, plus some of the smaller mammals that are in good number here like Red Duiker, Suni, Blue Duiker, Mutable Sun Squirrel, Blue Monkey and if we can find them the amazing Palm Civets at night time with a spot light. 

Out on the open flood plains there is a wonderful array of larger mammals like Sable, Lichensteins Hartebeest, Oribi, Warthogs, Buffalo, Eland, Waterbuck, Southern Reedbuck and of course the Lions and Cheetah are here watching these vast herds so sitting with them to try and watch them hunt will be a highlight.

We have also incoporated a scenic helicopter flight over the open plains towards Marromeau National Park which is very special and gives you an amazing view of what this area is all about and how dense the wildlife populations are. If you would like to add in a flight over to the Zambezi Delta we can add this in as well.

Day notes

The Maputo Elephant Reserve is a stunning piece of Wilderness area that is part of the Peace Parks Project that links it with a whole series of wildlife areas through into South Africa and along the coast making this a very important part of the whole project. It also has the wonderful addition of having the protected Ponta D'Ouro protected Marine Reserve off the coast for the reefs and beaches. So apart from being in a beautiful camp right on the beach you have a number of very different ecosystems to explore. These include the tidal rock pools, the reefs with snorkelling, a bit further out we can go to look for whales and dolphins and at this time of year it is the right time for the Loggerhead and Leatherback Turtles to be hatching which will be incredible in the moonlight along the beach. Then inland we have the Coastal forests and Mangroves, then as you move back the more traditional savannah environments with your African species like Elephants that the reserve is there to protect along with Hippos, Zebras Buffalo, Reedbuck and a whole lot more.

Today you will fly back to Maputo by helicopter - it is a 30 min flight and we will time this to suit International Flights and COVID tests necessary for departure.
