Expert tips

Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River is one of Africa’s most iconic destinations and deservedly on many safari bucket lists. That awe-inspiring vertical drop of 108m into the chasm below, as well as the mist spray curtain during full flood that can be seen and heard from afar (its local name is ‘Mosi-oa- Tunya’, which means ‘the smoke that thunders’), make for a truly unforgettable experience. Just wandering the streets of this quaint town is a special experience as you negotiate for souvenirs, dodge warthogs (and elephants!), hang out with locals and sample a range of restaurants and bars.

Victoria Falls is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It’s also an adventure centre of note. You could stay for ages and enjoy a different activity every day, from bungee jumping, gorge swinging and white water rafting, to helicopter and microlight flights (a.k.a the flight of angels), sunset boat and steam train cruises, horse riding, game drives, canoe trips, and so much more.

During your safari on the Zimbabwe side of Victoria Falls, walk across the bridge and also visit the Zambian side, which offers an exhilarating walk across the ‘Knife-edge Bridge’, a close-up view of the ‘Boiling Pot’ (a scary whirlpool at the base of the falls) and, for the really adventurous, a dip in the famous ‘Devil’s Pool‘.

**October and November can be an ideal time to plan a visit Devil's Pool Victoria Falls, as those months provide the best odds for water levels being lower, which is necessary. Visitors must plan a trip to Devil's Pool based upon lower water levels in the Zambezi River

Chobe Game Viewing

Expert tips

The Chobe River waterfront near the town of Kasane attracts massive herds of elephant and buffalo in the dry season, offering fantastic photographic opportunities as they bathe and drink in the late afternoon sunlight.

Perhaps the most relaxing way to spend the afternoon, after hours in the game drive vehicle exploring the river banks and deeper into Chobe National Park, is to take a sunset cruise down the river in pursuit of that perfect photograph and to look for Chobe bushbuck, a localised race of the more common bushbuck. And of course birdwatching adds another level of enjoyment as you drift downstream, with a cold G&T in one hand and binoculars in the other. For those in the know, there is a Pel’s fishing owl to be seen in the area …

Wildlife includes four of the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo – only rhinos are absent), many antelope species (including the only population of puku in Botswana), zebras, giraffes and good populations of cheetahs, hyenas and wild dogs, as well as a plethora of smaller species such as serval, aardwolf, pangolin, aardvark and bat-eared fox.

Birding in northern Chobe can be rewarding, with over 450 species including slaty egret, Bradfield’s hornbill, wattled cranes, pennant-winged nightjar, broad-tailed paradise whydah, collared palm-thrush, miombo rock-thrush, Allen’s gallinule, lesser jacana, rock pratincole, Schalow’s turaco, racket-tailed roller and rosy-breasted longclaw.

Days 5 - 6: Savuti - Chobe National Park

Today your adventure continues as you travel into the Savute plains. Please meet in the main area for your road transfer to Kasane airport, the time of your departure from Chobe Safari Lodge will be advised locally.

On arrival at Kasane airport check-in for your seat in a charter light aircraft flight to Savuti airstrip.

On arrival at the airstrip, you will be met by a representative from camp and transferred a short distance by game viewer to Savute Safari Lodge camp.

Stretching from the Linyanti River all the way to Savute Marsh, the winding waterways of the Savute Channel have pumped life into the western section of Chobe National Park for many thousands of generations. However, this fickle and unpredictable channel, which has a fascinating history of flooding and drying up, independently of good rainy seasons and flood levels elsewhere, has mystified local inhabitants, geologists and others for many years.

Explore the mysteries of this plains and its woodlands on daily game drives throughout the Savute area in open 4×4 safari vehicles. Several trips will incorporate a visit to the Savute marsh to give you a chance to see the historic presence of the Savute channel at the marsh against a backdrop of teeming wildlife. Guests can also enjoy a visit to the ancient San rock paintings at Gubatsa Hills – a small hilly outcrop which forms a prominent landmark in the otherwise flat landscape.

Savute boasts the second-largest summer zebra migration in Africa; its timing is determined by the rains, but usually occurs between November and December and again between February and April, when the zebras move from the rivers in the north in search of the rain-ripe grasslands and full waterholes in the southwest of the park. The migration is always followed by large numbers of predators.

The rich diversity of the Savute means that there is good game-viewing year-round - not only when zebras are on their migration mission.

Expert tips

Savute (Savuti) is a vast open grassland famous for massive herds of buffalos and elephants and for the large prides of lions that have learned to hunt them. The area plays host to dramatic scenes during the dry season when elephant breeding herds have to drink from the dwindling surface water, and lions ambush the young and ill members of the herd.

The lifeblood of this western section of Chobe National Park is Savute Marsh, a relic inland lake now fed by the erratic Savute Channel. The channel is fed seasonally with water from the Kwando and Okavango Rivers, but often dries up for many seasons, probably due to tectonic plate movements, and is also thought to flow both ways on occasion.

Wildlife includes four of the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo – only rhinos are absent), many antelope species, zebras and giraffes with good populations of cheetahs, hyenas and wild dogs, as well as a plethora of smaller species such as serval, aardwolf, pangolin, aardvark and bat-eared fox. The area is home to a number of large old bull elephants as well as breeding herds that roam the area. Lion prides and hyena clans grow to large sizes, and large
