From Quito to Hacienda Zuleta
On our first day, we head the early morning northbound across the Pan-American highway for about 2 hours.
Haciendas represent a unique immersion into the privileged past of Spanish Colonial country life in Ecuador. They linger in the beautiful pastoral setting of the rural mountainside, showcasing a profound agricultural world.
The hacienda house is, of course, a staple of the hacienda experience. It is usually a stone manor with beautiful hardwood floors, lush gardens, Spanish-style patios and corridors, and nearby stables with horses that will graciously take you down their favorite country paths. Many haciendas also boast their chapels, with their Colonial sculptures, and some even house small-scale factories and community workshops, producing excellent farmer’s cheeses and local crafts.
