Expert tips

Add on to your safari and support local Artisans

Visit Project Luangwa were the local women hand make items including handbags, clothing and other items made from recyclable materials. One of the special items that the ladies make is the Ufulu Pads, a unique washable and reusable menstrual pad which helps the local girls stay in school during their menstrual cycle. Imagine missing 25% of your lessons because you are a girl, a girl without sanitary pads. That is exactly what happens to many girls living in rural areas of Zambia who have no access to disposable pads or who are unable to afford to buy them.

Project Luangwa makes washable, reusable pads in their craft workshop in Mfuwe. This project has a double impact as not only do we help girls attend school every day of the month but we provide skills training and employment to local 'less fortunate' women.

Project Luangwa sponsors pupils and teacher training, Building and renovating classrooms, providing exercise books, furniture, teaching aids and text books, Building and populating school libraries.

Do stop at the Baobab Shop directly opposite Project Luangwa this ladies group is independently run so a great project to support. The ladies got together and received some training in sewing. As always there were a few who excelled and they started to make bags, boxer shorts, hats, hippo and elephant soft toys and all sorts.  Interestingly the walls are built from eco bricks (bottles stuffed with plastic).
