Breakfast Lunch and Dinner
Enjoy the morning in the Mara, leaving after lunch to connect to your 2pm flight to Malindi where you will be met (at 4pm) by our representative and driven two hours to the departure point of the boat, which will take you on a stunning 20-minute boat trip to the H12 Delta Dunes Lodge. Most visitors are stunned by the proliferation of bird life and find this one of the most extraordinary and beautiful boat rides ever experienced. For an hour or two one can travel up or down on this great wide channel, level with the flood plains. Overhead there is a mass of birds circling in the sky and hundreds more perched on the riverbanks. Large flocks of less common species such as glossy ibis and pratincoles, innumerable waders. Crocodiles, great and small, are plentiful and further upstream the river widens into a lake filled by a staggering number of hippo, literally hundreds of them. Arrive at the ‘wild place by the sea’ in time for dinner
Day 6, 7 and 8 On safari in the Delta Three days of idyllic Robinson Crusoe living in one of just six luxurious cottages amongst the rolling sand dunes of the Tana River Delta. The 708 km Tana River flows through Garissa and Garsen before branching into a huge delta as it enters the Indian Ocean, south of Lamu. Along the last 65 km of its course it flows across a broad floodplain, which is now The Lower Delta Conservation Trust and lies under the stewardship of the Orma and Pokomo. The Orma are of Ethiopian descent and are herdsmen, while the Pokomo are farmers and fishermen and the ancestral guardians of the Ozi Forest, a sanctuary for elephants, buffaloes and many other rare species.
Enjoy a leisurely morning and, after lunch, retrace your boat and road journey to Malindi to connect to your flight to Nairobi and your onward connection.
