Day 1: Ngorongoro Crater

Fly from Arusha Airport to Manyara Airport. After your flight, you will be met and transferred to your camp in the Ngorongoro Highlands. Enjoy an afternoon walk in the Highlands.

The Highlands redefines the Ngorongoro experience. Set on the edge of the mountain forest hugging the Olmoti Crater to the north of Ngorongoro Crater, The Highlands strikes a perfect balance between a true wilderness experience and a stylish, contemporary escape. Experience the highlands of the wild Ngorongoro Conservation Area surrounding the camp, home to buffalo, smaller predators, and majestic moorland scenery. Follow ancient Maasai trails to the rim of the Olmoti Crater and visit local communities to catch a glimpse into the traditional Maasai way of life that has defined this corner of East Africa for centuries. The famous Ngorongoro Crater is easily accessible from camp, while the setting ensures maximum privacy, a rich adventure, and a range of activities not possible elsewhere in Ngorongoro.

Day 2: Ngorongoro Crater

After breakfast, drive to the Ngorongoro Park Gate then further to the crater rim descent road.  From here, descend the dramatic 2,000 ft walls for game viewing on the Ngorongoro Crater floor. Spend the day wildlife viewing and enjoy a picnic lunch in the largest intact volcanic caldera. Over 20,000 mammals call the crater home, including some of the only remaining black rhinos in the world.

Day 3: Eastern Serengeti

After breakfast, visit a local Maasai village for an authentic cultural experience seeing how members of this traditional society work, live and play, including tending to their livestock.  After, you will be transferred to Manyara airstrip for your shared charter flight to Serengeti National Park. Upon arrival you will be met by a camp representative and transferred to camp with game viewing en route. Arrive at camp for lunch. Enjoy an afternoon game drive.

The Serengeti National Park is Tanzania’s oldest and most popular national park. Its name means 'endless plain' in the Masai language. It is from here that massive concentrations of wildebeest, zebras and other animals commence the annual Great Migration in search of pastures new, providing one of the greatest natural spectacles to be found anywhere in the world. You can watch golden-maned lions stalking the migrating herds, spot leopards at rest in trees at dusk and take a hot-air balloon tour at dawn as the sun’s golden rays illuminate the land.

Expert tips

A typical day on safari brings different experiences but generally your safari day includes two major activities/game drives per day.  One beginning early in the morning and the second starting mid to late afternoon. There may be times when you stay out all day and a picnic lunch is then provided.

Your day usually starts with an early wake up, normally before sunrise.  You’ll have a light breakfast then a morning game drive to catch the animals in action before the heat of the day sets in.  While out, you may stop and have some tea/coffee and snacks before returning to your camp/lodge for brunch or lunch and a siesta. Most morning activities are over by late morning (around 10/11:00am).

In the late afternoon (usually between 3:30-4:30pm), you’ll head back out for another game drive where often you will end with a ‘sundowner’ (drinks and snacks in the bush).  You will then return to the camp/lodge in time for dinner and drinks. Most safari vehicles are partially if not entirely open to ensure that everyone has a great view.

On transfer days where you move between camps the itinerary may be slightly different depending on your schedule. Your guide and camp managers will discuss and plan your days with you.

Upon arrival, you will be met by a representative for your road transfer to Migori airstrip in Kenya, clearing customs and immigration at the Sirare border. Fly to the Masai Mara. Upon arrival, you will be met by a camp representative and transferred to camp with possible game viewing en route. Enjoy an afternoon game activity, time permitting.

The Masai Mara is one of Africa’s greatest wildlife reserves. Acacia dotted plains, tree-lined rivers and woodlands are abundant with wildlife and an array of bird life. Game viewing is spectacular year round; you may see a pride of lions stalking their prey, observe a herd of elephant and their fascinating social structure, or see pods of hippo wallowing in the rivers. The great wildebeest migration is one of nature’s wonders; an estimated two million animals migrate in a year-round pattern through Tanzania and Kenya, following the rain. Around July each year the huge herds begin dramatic river crossings and the grasslands of the Mara are covered by a mass of moving wildebeest, offering easy opportunity for crocodile and predators that are never far away. When in the Mara visit a traditional Masai village or take a balloon safari at an extra cost.
