Cross the Tugela River on one of the crossings, you are now in what is referred to as "Zululand" - the home region of the proud Zulu people.  Our overnight stop is at Shakaland, a cultural village.  We will have dinner and a Zulu cultural performance during the stay at Shakaland.

Day 4: Amakhosi Private Game Reserve

A safari is a journey of discovery in which you are one with your surroundings. Being part of life in the bush is the essence of a safari and being able to do it is a privilege one should never take for granted.

During your stay at Amakhosi Safari Lodge, you will have the opportunity to join a morning and an afternoon game-drive.    Each drive takes approximately 3 hours, and you never know what you will encounter on the drives.  During the morning drive, we stop for coffee and rusks, and we return to the lodge for a big and tasty 'brunch'.

The middle of the day is without a programme:  you can join your game ranger for a bush walk. Bush walks brings you closer to the heartbeat of the bush, submitting yourself to the mercy of nature. Your knowledgable guide knows exactly where to take  guests for exciting, yet safe encounters with pristine fauna and flora.

During the middle of the day you can also book a Spa treatment in Amakhosi's prize-winning Spa, or you can relax in your luxurious chalet - enjoy the swimming pool and just let the peace of the African savanna sooth your soul.

We meet early afternoon for "High Tea" before setting off on the afternoon game drive.  We stop for the traditional 'sun-downer'; drinks and snacks.  The afternoon game drive will also continue for a short while after dark, where we use spotlights to try to see some of the shy, nocturnal animals.   Return to the lodge for a delicious dinner.

Day 5: Rorkes Drift

We leave Amakhosi after breakfast, and continue our ride on country roads far from civilisation. The area is known as the "Battlefields" area, from the historic battles which took place here, both during the Anglo-Zulu War in 1879, as well as the Boer Wars at the beginning of the 1900ds.

Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift are sites which are well known all over the world as historic battle sites, and our lodge - Fugitives Drift Lodge, bears testimony to this important history.

Travelling distance today:  approx. 190 km, 30% tar, 70% gravel.
Meals included:  Breakfast, Dinner

Day 6: Northern Drakensberg

We ride along valleys and rivers, on country roads. This ride is mapped to take in some of the greatest and little known big gravel passes KwaZulu-Natal has to offer. The tour is mostly staged in very remote back-country and mostly on exceptionally good gravel with little to no motor vehicle traffic. Amidst the great gravel passes and long curving gravel roads there is some thrilling as well as challenging single track riding. The northern rim of the middle Tugela Valley is the home of the greatest vistas in KwaZulu-Natal. This leg of the tour is the  guide's favourite.  We reach our overnight stop - the cosy Three Tree Hill Lodge.

Travelling distance today:  approx. 235 km, 10% tar, 90% gravel.
Meals included:  Breakfast, Dinner

Day 7: Durban

An early breakfast and departure from Three Tree Hill Lodge, we travel via Weenen, Muden and the beautiful Middelrus territory, with its aloes, enormous space, sparsely vegetated paper bark trees, making this a beautifully scenic ride, and all on good quality gravel roads.  Then, up and over / through the vast timber plantations of the Karkloof back to Durban.

Hand back your bikes and you will be transferred to your guesthouse. In the evening we meet for a "braai" (BBQ) dinner, while we share stories of our trip through KwaZulu-Natal.

Travelling distance today:  approx. 290 km, 50% tar, 50% gravel.

Meals included:  Breakfast, Dinner
