Days 6 - 7: Lewa Conservancy

Enjoy two full days of game viewing activities.

Enjoy twice daily game viewing activities.

A team of fully-qualified driver guides are on hand for vehicle safaris across the conservancy. The specially adapted open vehicles allow for excellent viewing but it is the richness of the game that our guests talk about. All the main safari predators, the rare Grevy zebra and of course the threatened rhino, both black and white, can be viewed in abundance. A particular favourite and well recognised aspect of the area near the lodge are the good elephant numbers. The game drives are on your terms using our experience and are not limited to daylight hours. We often explore the conservancy by night using spotlight and the full moon when it obliges. Lewa offers a very good opportunity to see the Big 5.

Walking with Masai

One of the most popular ways to explore the conservancy is in a more traditional fashion – on foot. Lewa Wilderness’ expert Masai walking guides, who have lived here all their lives, explore Lewa with guests to really get up close to many of our wild neighbours. Out walking almost nothing is a barrier and ground is covered very easily making the safari experience so much more real. Guests either walk in the early morning or early evening before dark. For the more in depth walking we suggest a few nights on Walking Wild.

Day 8: Olare Motorogi Conservancy

This morning you will connect with your scheduled charter flight to Nairobi, and then continue on to the Masai Mara where you will be met and transferred to Mara Plains Camp where you will arrive in time for a game viewing activity. You will stay here for 3 nights.

Mara Plains Camp is a one-of-a-kind luxury Kenya safari camp located in the private 13, 300-hectare Olare Motorogi Conservancy, just on the Maasai Mara National Reserve’s northern boundary. This intimate Great Plains Conservation Réserve-Collection safari camp is one of Kenya’s only three Relais & Chateaux properties. The other safari camps are its sister properties,  ol Donyo Lodge and Mara Nyika Camp. Mara Plains Camp blends the finest in wildlife viewing with the absolute best of safari hospitality and guiding.

No other Maasai Mara-based camp offers the extensive traversing area of Mara Plains Camp, with access to a total of 40, 000 hectares of private conservancy land and the world-renowned Maasai Mara, home to the Great Migration.

Mara Plains Camp is receiving a soft refurbishment in terms of some décor, with upgraded guest suite entrances to wooden Zanzibari doors, with the entire camp closed from the 25th of February to the 23rd of March 2023.
Upon reopening on the 24th of March 2023, there will also be a large, theatrical, interactive kitchen added on the left-hand side of the central main dining area.

This Great Plains Conservation Réserve-Collection safari camp is nestled in a lush forest on the meandering bends of the Ntiakitiak River, carefully considering every detail. The camp is not an imposition on the landscape but rather a subtle refuge among the wild. Its presence does not detract from the ecosystem’s visual beauty but incorporates it with sweeping views across the plains and careful position among the riverine forest. It is captivating on arrival.

The well-appointed en-suite facilities (including a deep copper bath) and extensive private verandah complete what is genuinely a stunning concept. Each suite has deep canvas canopied ceilings, rough-hewn wood floors and accents of East Africa’s rich safari history. Thick Lamu wood doors, deep reds, and brass accents – these small details transport guests to a time and land far away. These stylistic elements and thoughtful environmental elements such as solar power and no cement make Mara Plains a modern-day safari retreat.

The Mara Plains Jahazi Suite, an intimate, two-bedroom exquisite, tented luxury Kenya safari suite, is built entirely under canvas. It is on raised, recycled railway sleeper decking and offers guests incredible views of the steady stream of wildlife parading past whilst discreetly tucked away under the tree canopy. Central to the Mara Plains Jahazi Suite is an indoor dining area leading out to a prominent private outdoor verandah and flanked by two large bedrooms with en-suite facilities consisting of a flush loo, double basins and indoor and outdoor showers and luxurious baths. A short walkway leads off the main area to a private swimming pool. Ceiling fans in the guest’s bedroom and careful tented suite design maintain a comfortable climate for rest and relaxation. When residing at the Mara Plains Jahazi Suite, guests automatically enjoy the services of a private game drive vehicle and guide.
