Tswalu Kalahari has populations of both black and white rhino which are thriving under the protection of the conservation team. Rhinos are identified by notches in their ears as well as microchips under the skin and in the horns, to assist in combating the illegal trade in rhino horn.

For people interested in conservation who would like to participate in a rhino notching programme. Where you will have the oppurnity to participate n a private two day rhino notching safari. During the cooler months at Tswalu, between April and September, guests are offered the unique experience of booking their own private rhino monitoring safari. Tswalu then co-ordinates a big game vet to oversee the project, as well a helicopter and experienced pilot. The rhino is located and a GPS co-ordinate is sent through to the pilot. The vet travels with the pilot to dart the rhino.

The guests form part of the ground crew, so once the animal has been darted they are involved in notching the ears and inserting the microchips into the rhino. They have their photograph taken with the animal before the anti-dote is given. Once the rhino is up and off, the guests enjoy a helicopter flip back to the helipad at Tarkuni private villa. If time permits, the team can notch more than one rhino.
