Welcome to Morocco!

You’ll arrive in Casablanca, Morocco’s industrial and economic hub on the Atlantic coast. Locals call it "Casa," and while it’s often skipped in favour of Morocco’s more famous destinations, it’s a fascinating city with a lot to discover.

You can explore the impressive King Hassan II Mosque, stroll through the Old Medina, or take in the city’s unique mix of Art Deco and Moorish architecture. Don’t miss the Mahkama du Pacha for its stunning tilework and intricate wood carvings. If you're feeling laid back, grab a coffee at a waterfront café and watch the world go by.

A Close Encounters Representative will meet you at the airport and take you straight to your hotel, where you can check in and rest after your journey.

Depending on your flight time, you might want to relax or head out for a short walk near the hotel to start getting a feel for the city.

Later in the day, you'll have an orientation tour to help you get your bearings and take in some local sights. In the evening, enjoy your first Moroccan dinner at a local restaurant—perfect for swapping first impressions and diving into the flavours of your trip.

Day 2: Casablanca

Afterward, head to the Ain Diab Corniche for a relaxed walk along the waterfront promenade. It’s a great place to take in ocean views, stop for a drink at a seaside café, and enjoy a slower pace of the city.

In the afternoon, visit the Royal Palace of Casablanca. While you won’t be able to go inside, the exterior is impressive—especially the grand entrance and the traditionally dressed guards. It’s a good spot for photos and a quick glimpse into Morocco’s royal heritage.

Day 3: Casablanca

Casablanca

This morning, explore the lively alleyways of Casablanca’s Old Medina. With your guide leading the way through the maze-like streets, you’ll soak up the vibrant atmosphere of a traditional Moroccan bazaar—filled with local vendors, spices, textiles, and everyday life.

Next, head to Mohammed V Square, the city’s main civic centre surrounded by grand French colonial buildings. Then visit the Church of Notre Dame de Lourdes, a striking modernist church known for its stunning stained-glass windows and peaceful interior—a quiet contrast to the busy streets outside.

Day 4: Meknes

Meknes

Located in central Morocco and surrounded by cedar forests, mountains, and oases, Meknes is one of the country’s four imperial cities. It’s quieter and more relaxed than nearby Fez but still full of history and character.

Wander through the ancient medina, admire the impressive city walls, and stop at Bab el-Mansour—one of Morocco’s grandest gates, decorated with intricate mosaic tilework. Visit the Mausoleum of Sultan Moulay Ismail, known for its elegant courtyards and fountains, and explore the vast Heri es-Souani granaries and stables. Be sure to spend time in the lively Place el-Hedim marketplace.

Later, travel to Rabat, Morocco’s capital and the King’s official residence. The city’s historic centre is home to grand palaces, mosques, and ancient ramparts. Highlights include the Royal Palace, the towering Hassan Tower, the white-marble Mausoleum of Mohammed V, and the peaceful Andalusian Gardens inside the Kasbah of the Udayas.

From Casablanca to Rabat and on to Meknes, this stretch offers a rich introduction to Morocco’s imperial past and vibrant present.

Day 5: Fes

Fes

Once Morocco’s capital and now its spiritual heart, Fes is a city full of history, tradition, and energy. It’s the second-largest city in the country and home to a maze-like old town packed with Arabic architecture, lively markets, and the sounds of daily life—from calls to prayer to busy souks.

You’ll find important religious and cultural sites here, including the Karaouine Mosque, founded in 859 AD, and the shrine of Moulay Idriss II, one of the country’s most revered. If you’re visiting in June, try to catch the famous Festival of Sacred Music, which brings together artists from around the world in a celebration of spiritual sound. The city’s markets are also a major draw, offering beautiful silverwork, leather goods, and handmade crafts.

Before reaching Fes, your journey takes you through Volubilis—one of Morocco’s best-preserved Roman ruins. Surrounded by olive groves and fertile farmland, this archaeological site showcases ancient mosaics, columns, and remnants of temples that give a glimpse into a different era.

By lunchtime, you’ll be in Fes, ready to explore the medina, souks, and vibrant streets. From ancient heritage to local culture, this city offers a deep and fascinating look at Morocco’s past and present.

Day 6: Fes

Today you’ll dive into the heart of Fes el Bali, the city’s oldest quarter and the world’s largest car-free urban area. This ancient medina is a maze of narrow alleys filled with centuries-old buildings, vibrant markets, and the energy of daily Moroccan life.

Your guided tour takes you through some of the medina’s most iconic sights, including the Bou Inania Madrasa—a stunning example of traditional Moroccan architecture—and the famous leather tanneries, where colourful dye vats create a striking scene you won’t forget. As you walk through the souks, you’ll be surrounded by the scent of spices, the textures of handwoven fabrics, and the sounds of shopkeepers calling out their wares.

You'll also explore the historic Jewish quarter, or Mellah, with its peaceful cemetery and unique architecture, and view the exterior of the University of Al-Qarawiyyin, founded in the 9th century and considered one of the world’s oldest universities. Although non-Muslims can’t enter, the surrounding complex still offers a glimpse into its historical significance.

Depending on your arrival time, parts of this tour may take place the afternoon before.

Day 7: Ouzoud

Ouzoud Falls

After breakfast, you'll set off on a scenic journey from Fes to the Ouzoud Falls, one of Morocco’s most spectacular natural sights. The drive takes you through a changing landscape, with stops along the way for rest and lunch.

You’ll pass through the town of Ifrane, known for its alpine-style architecture and peaceful cedar forests, where you may spot wild macaque monkeys along the roadside. It's a great place to stretch your legs before continuing your journey.

By afternoon, you’ll arrive at the Ouzoud Falls, where powerful cascades tumble 100 metres into turquoise pools below. A local guide will take you on a walk down through the gorge to the base of the falls—an easy one-hour hike with fantastic views along the way. Once you reach the bottom, you’ll have the chance to take a short (and splashy!) boat ride or go for a swim if the weather’s right.

The area is lush and green, with plenty of local cafés and stalls to enjoy a drink or a snack before heading back. It's a refreshing, nature-filled break from the city, and a great way to experience one of Morocco’s hidden gems.

Day 8: Imlil

After leaving the beautiful Ouzoud Falls behind, your journey continues toward Imlil, a small village high in the Atlas Mountains. The drive takes about four hours and brings you through the wide Haouz Plain and into the hills near Asni, where the landscape begins to change.

As you head further into the mountains, you’ll see traditional villages clinging to the hillsides and wide valleys opening up below. The road winds through the dramatic Oued Rhirhaia valley until you reach Imlil, sitting at around 1,740 metres above sea level. Surrounded by mountain peaks, this peaceful village is the gateway to Toubkal National Park.

Once in Imlil, you’ll be surrounded by natural beauty—snow-capped mountains, terraced fields, and forested slopes. Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa, is nearby and popular for trekking. You don’t need to be a serious hiker to enjoy the area though—there are plenty of walking trails, chances to visit Berber villages, and even hammams where you can relax after a day out.

The mix of fresh mountain air, autumn colours from the fruit trees, and snowy peaks in the distance make Imlil a great place to slow down and enjoy the landscape.

Over the next couple of days, you can explore the surrounding area on foot or take short drives to nearby valleys and scenic viewpoints. There are also opportunities to visit nearby Berber villages and learn more about the local way of life. If you're keen to hike, walking poles are available to rent in town.

This part of the trip offers a quieter, more relaxed pace, perfect for soaking in the mountain surroundings and experiencing the slower rhythm of life in the High Atlas.

Day 10: Imlil

Imlil

Another beautiful day in the Atlas Mountains begins. Today, you might visit the nearby village of Aremd, the largest in the valley, sitting at 1,900 metres. It’s a lively place with traditional terraced farming, narrow paths full of goats and cattle, and locals who have farmed this land for generations—growing corn, potatoes, and walnuts.

You'll be surrounded by fruit and nut trees as you explore, with plenty of peaceful spots to pause and take in the scenery. Lunch is planned at a guesthouse overlooking Imlil, offering wide views of the village and the surrounding mountains.

The afternoon is yours to relax and enjoy the peaceful mountain landscape. Whether you sit and take it all in or explore more of the area, it’s a chance to soak up the slower pace and natural beauty of this part of Morocco.

Day 11: Essaouira

Essaouira

You’ll head to Essaouira, a charming town on Morocco’s southwest coast, famous for its long golden beaches and laid-back vibe. Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and green hills, it’s a place where you can enjoy fresh sea air and colorful wildflowers in spring.

Essaouira is known for its busy fishing harbor, white and blue houses, and a lively medina full of markets and crafts. The strong Atlantic winds make it a hotspot for kitesurfing and windsurfing, but the town still keeps its old-world charm—perfect for relaxing and escaping the rush of city life.

You’ll explore the narrow streets of the medina, the Jewish Mellah quarter, and the port area with its colorful fishing boats. Don’t miss the sea wall (Skala) offering great views and a sense of the town’s history. Essaouira has a rich tradition of wood carving and cabinet making, and you’ll find many small workshops and galleries showcasing local crafts.

The town is also famous for Gnawa music—a unique style blending Islamic and African influences. If you’re lucky, you might catch a live Gnawa performance at a local restaurant like Il Mare or Sam’s.

In the evening, enjoy fresh seafood at a local restaurant, soaking in the relaxed coastal atmosphere.
