Day 7: Luxor

Highlights: West Bank Private Tour

This morning you will head back over to the West Bank for your private tour of the Valley of the Kings & Queens.

Valley of the Kings and Queens: The ancient Egyptians stopped building pyramids as royal tombs after robbers stole all the treasures inside, and instead they started burying their royalty in secret tombs at Thebes, today's West Bank of Luxor. Go there to explore the Valley of the Kings, where New Kingdom pharaohs were buried in hidden tombs which have maintained their richly painted hues and were filled with treasures for use in the afterlife. Then visit the Valley of the Queens, where the pharaohs' wives and children were buried.

You will also visit the Temple of Hatshepsut & the Colossi of Memnon.

Hatshepsut Temple: Rising out of the desert plain in a series of brilliant white terraces, the Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut merges with the sheer limestone cliffs that surround it. Forming a natural rock amphitheatre, the temple was an important religious and funerary site. Ancient Egypt's only female pharaoh dedicated the temple to the cults of Hathor, the cow goddess of beauty, and Anubis, god of mummification and leader of the king to the underworld. Numerous images and carvings depict Hathor with Hatshepsut, as well as details of the Pharaoh's voyage to the land of Punt, presumed to be present day Somalia. After her death, her jealous stepson and successor Tuthmosis III defaced many of these images in an attempt to curse her memory for eternity.

Colossi of Memnon: Enjoy a brief stop at the famed Colossi of Memnon, the two immense statues of Amenhotep III which, in Pharaonic times, guarded the entrance to his once great temple. They were renamed by the Ancient Greeks after the Trojan hero Memnon. The Greeks attributed the mournful cry once emitted by the statues at dawn to their sorrow for the loss of Memnon at the hands of Achilles. During the Roman period, the site became a resort spot where many prominent travelers left their own graffiti carved into the sandstone.

In this era Petra was a fortress, carved out of craggy rocks in an area which was virtually inaccessible. In the first and second century, after the Romans took over, the city reached the peak of its fame. Petra covers an area of about 100 square km, in which over 800 monuments can be found. When shipping slowly displaced caravan routes, the city's importance gradually dwindled; it fell into disuse and was lost to the world until 1812, when it was re-discovered by the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burkhart. Nowadays Petra is Jordan's number one tourist attraction, known as the "rose-red city half as old as time". The Khazneh (the Treasury), was featured in ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade’.

At 400 meters below sea level, the Dead Sea is infinite in what it has to offer. Ever since the days of Herod the Great, people have flocked to the Dead Sea in search of its curative secrets. Due to high annual temperatures, low humidity and high atmospheric pressure, the air is extremely exogenous, and the high content of oxygen and magnesium in the air make breathing a lot easier. With the highest content of minerals and salts in the world, the Dead Sea water possesses anti-inflammatory properties, and the dark mud found on the shores have been used for over 2000 years for therapeutic purposes.

Day 15: Amman

Highlights: Mt Nebo, Madaba: Church of Moses

Depart your hotel and start your Tour in Mont Nebo, It is the mountain where Moses was allowed to see the Holy Land… and not allowed to enter it. Nowadays the mountain is a memorial site. Here is the "Church of Moses", built by the first Christians. Ever since the first days of Christianity this mountain has been a holy place and a destination for pilgrimage. Like Moses, you can have a great view over Jordan, the Dead Sea and Israel. When the weather is clear, you should even be able to see Jerusalem, which is about 60 kilometers away.

South of Amman proudly stands the "City of Mosaics", Madaba, perched on an archaeological site with more than 4000 years of history buried beneath it. The quality and quantity of mosaic flooring has made Madaba one of the most prominent cities in the world for mosaics. St. George's Church houses the world famous mosaic floor depicting a large mosaic map of Palestine. Centrally located on this mosaic floor is a detailed Map of Jerusalem as it was during the sixth century AD. At the Church of the Apostles, at the southern entrance of the city, is a mosaic floor attributed to the craftsman Salamanios, depicting the Sea, with the central figure of a woman encircled with a selection of creatures, vegetation and an inscription.

Then drive to Amman for City Tour before returning to your hotel.

The Citadel which towers above the city from atop Jabal al-Qala’a is a good place to begin a tour of the city. The Citadel is the site of ancient Rabbath-Ammon, and excavations here have revealed numerous Roman, Byzantine and early Islamic remains. The most impressive building of the Citadel, known simply as al-Qasr ("the Palace"), dates back to the Islamic Umayyad period. Its exact function is unclear, but it includes a monumental gateway, an audience hall and four vaulted chambers. A colonnaded street also runs through the complex. To the north and northeast are the ruins of Umayyad palace grounds.
