Day 1 - 3

South Luangwa National Park

Day notes

Nestled on the banks of the Luangwa River, Nkwali boasts a prime location within a spectacular river meander, offering breathtaking views of the National Park where leopards are known to roam freely along the shoreline, often visible from the camp itself. Situated on Robin Pope Safaris' private land outside the park, Nkwali not only features a secluded game viewing area behind the camp, but also provides exclusive access into the park via boat or pontoon crossing.

Designed with a subtle sophistication, Nkwali offers its guests a sense of privacy, exceptional service, and an intimate connection to nature. The camp's central hub is built around a majestic ebony tree, which inspired Robin and Jo Pope to establish the camp at this very location. The tree-engulfed bar area extends out over the river, providing the perfect vantage point to enjoy a refreshing drink while witnessing the sun setting over the Luangwa.

Nkwali's six chalets are spacious and thoughtfully designed to provide uninterrupted river views throughout the day. In the evenings, elegant Constantia grill doors enclose the open room fronts, ensuring both privacy and security. The en-suite bathrooms are generously proportioned, featuring double sinks and open-air showers, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in the vast African skies.

Set back from the river, overlooking a serene lagoon, the camp's dining room and swimming pool invite guests to relax and observe the visiting wildlife, such as elephants and other animals, as they come to drink during the day, undisturbed by human presence.

The South Luangwa Park is 9050 sq. kilometres with the river, its tributaries and the riverine strips being the focus of the wildlife viewing. There are diverse habitats, from huge oxbow lagoons of varying stages of maturity, woodlands, ebony groves, grassland and thickets, that host a great variety of wildlife. The birdlife is also excellent with over 450 species to be seen.

The six tents are thoughtfully spaced apart to ensure privacy. Each en-suite bathroom has a spacious, open-air design that harmoniously blends with the natural environment. Curved walls encircle the trees, while subtle colours and expansive views enhance the overall experience.
