Day 4: Okavango Panhandle

Activities available at Mopiri Camp Includes:

Boat Trip and Bird Walk - A boat ride through the papyrus channels will get you to one of the islands close to Mopiri for a short bush walk. The birding is spectacular throughout the year. The area has approximately 325 bird species (of the roughly 500 found in Botswana). Exceptional birding months are from September to February, before the new waters arrives. This is when feeding conditions are at an optimum and most of the migrants are present during this time.

Barge Cruise - Enjoy a  sundowner or a spot of fishing aboard their double story barge "Osprey". This is the perfect way to start or end your stay, or simply when you want to relax and take in the surroundings.

Tsodilo Hills and Helicopter Flip - Visit two UNESCO sites in a day! Arriving by helicopter allows you to fully appreciate the significance of the hills from the air and enjoy the game viewing on the flights to and from Mopiri. Four rocky hills, including Botswana's highest point, surrounded by Kalahari Desert plains form Tsodilo. With over 4500 rock paintings, some dating back an estimated 26,000 years, the hills are sacred to the San Bushman who utilised the caves and spring here until the late 20th century, and there is evidence of human activity here dating back some 100,000 years. You are accompanied by an unassuming and ever-smiling San guide who will explain the fascinating artwork, presenting a side to Botswana few tourists get to experience.

Fishing - Mopiri Camp is a prime destination for lure fishing. Tiger fish are indigenous to the area, and as one of the world's most dramatic freshwater game fish it provides thrilling angling for both experienced and novice fishermen. In addition to Tigerfish, up to eight other species are generally caught on line, creating eventful and memorable fishing at Mopiri. (Please note that fishing is prohibited in January and February throughout Botswana for fish breeding purposes).

Full Day Out - Take  a boat trip through the cool papyrus channels into the depths of the Okavango Delta. The channels are abound with water lilies, frogs, birds, crocodiles and hippos. After about an hour and a half the channels open up to beautiful islands where you can spend the day walking across numerous islands, using the mokoro and boat as your water taxi from each island. Lunch will be set up on one of the islands so you can leave camp early in the morning and return just before dark.

Helicopter Flip - Experience the best of the Okavango Delta with an open doors helicopter flight over some of the most pristine and unreachable areas. The Robinson R44's reliability and maneuverability makes its ideally suited to flying over the Delta.

Your trusty barman will ensure that your sundowner is on hand, and a full 3-course meal will be prepared over the coals. This magical experience gives you the best chance to see wildlife, and allows you to experience all the activities on offer. Your room will be ready and waiting for you on your return to Mopiri the next day. (Please note that these must be booked in advance as they are set up prior to your arrival).
