The centre is the headquarters of the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (AFEW) which was setup to raise money to relocate the endangered Rothschild giraffe to safe areas.

The house was once the centre piece of a farm owned by Danish Author Karen and her Swedish Husband, Baron Bror von Blixen. The museum gained international fame with the release of the Oscar winning film ‘Out of Africa’, which is based on Karen’s life.

Then visit Kazuri Beads Factory which was started to help women around Nairobi with regular employment so that they could support their families and educate their children. Meet the women and chat with them about their lives as they work.  The jewellery also makes great gifts!

After, you will be transferred to Karen Gables and do an inspection tour of the hotel.

Meals are served in the main dining room or on the terrace overlooking the swimming pool. There is a poolside bar, back-up generator and Wi-Fi access.

17:00: Adoption visit to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s elephant orphanage, meet the baby Elephants as they return from the bush for the night and talk to their keepers to learn more about this worthwhile project and the importance of the elephant in Africa’s conservation efforts.

The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s elephant Orphanage is a small charity, established in 1977 by the late Dr. Dame Daphne Sheldrick to honor the memory of her husband, famous Naturalist, David Sheldrick, the founder Warden of Tsavo East National Park in Kenya. For over 25 years Kenya born Daphne lived and worked alongside her late husband and during that time she raised and rehabilitated back into the wild orphans of misfortune from many different wild species, including elephants aged two and upwards.

She was a recognized International authority on the rearing of wild creatures and is the first person to have perfected the milk formula and necessary husbandry for both infant milk dependent elephants and rhinos. For her work in this field Daphne received several prestigious awards. The elephant orphans raised by the Trust are gradually rehabilitated back into the wild elephant community of Tsavo National Park when grown, a transition that is made at their own pace and in their own time, but usually taking approximately eight to ten years. A number of ex-Nursery orphans have now had young born in the wild.

Adopting these special animals gives them a second chance to live freely in the wild.

Return to your hotel, Dinner on your own arrangements.

Day 3: Nanyuki

Thu. 17 Jan 2019

Early breakfast at the hotel.

Drive to Tribe Hotel for an inspection tour of the hotel.

Tribe is a luxury hotel in Nairobi that takes you into a world of hip, chic design with an emphasis on detail, while offering a cultural journey through hand-picked arts, crafts and furnishings from the farthest corners of Africa. The rooms and suites extend a level of world-class comfort, luxury and functionality. The hotel is located in a leafy suburb within Nairobi’s Diplomatic District and is attached to The Village Market, a beautiful shopping and recreation complex.

After the inspection, begin your safari by driving North of the country past pineapple, coffee and tea plantations and across the equator to Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

Make a brief stop at the Equator for a short demonstration by the locals on the notion that the water behaves differently in the northern and southern hemispheres.

Continue with your journey to Olpejeta Conservancy, a short game

en-route to Ol Pejeta House arriving in time for lunch.

Ol Pejeta is a private 90,000 acres Conservancy which is home to Kenya's largest population of Black Rhino, a large number of elephant, cheetah, lion, leopard and plains game including the rare Northern species such as Grevy’s Zebra, Jacksons Hartebeest and Beisa Oryx. In addition, the Wildlife Educational Centre is interesting for both children and adults alike, and the Chimpanzee Sanctuary for orphaned chimps offers the opportunity to learn about the perils facing chimpanzees in the wild. This private wilderness boasts an astounding variety of wildlife, including the endangered black and white rhino, and a number of endangered species, most notably the rare Grevy's zebra and the Jackson's hartebeest.

Once the exclusive ranch house of multi-millionaire Adnan Kashoggi, this magnificently presented house stands at the centre of the private Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

The house features a series of reception rooms, including an elegant drawing room with baronial fireplace and a series of scenic verandas, which extend right around the house. The dining room is served by its own dedicated chef and kitchens. Accommodation includes two master suites, two guest bedrooms and a private guest cottage and the grounds have two private swimming pools and a barbeque and external dining area.

Later in the afternoon, you will have a chance to visit the Chimpanzee Sanctuary, the only sanctuary for chimpanzees in Kenya.

The chimpanzees’ natural home range spans from Senegal on the West African coast, through the central forested belt of Africa, to Uganda. They are not native to Kenya, but when a rescue centre in Burundi had to be closed due to the civil war outbreak in 1993 – Ol Pejeta opened its doors. The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary was established with an agreement between the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the Jane Goodall Institute. The aim – to provide lifelong refuge to orphaned and abused chimpanzees from West and Central Africa. Over the last decade, Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary has been compelled to keep accepting chimpanzees rescued from traumatic situations - bringing the total number of chimpanzees in the Sanctuary to 39. Many are confiscated from cramped and unnatural living conditions, and many arrive with horrific injuries sustained from abuse at the hands of humans. Here at Sweetwater’s, they get a chance to start over. This visit is offered at an extra cost as well.

You will also visit the Morani Information Centre which offers visitors a chance to learn about the various species of wildlife present in the Conservancy. This is an interesting stop for both adults & kids where you are encouraged to touch/feel the artefacts on display.

Here, you will meet Baraka, the blind black rhino.

He lost his right eye defending his territory from another bull and the left later developed a crystallised cataract. This total loss of eyesight meant he could no longer survive in the wild.

Lucky for him just then we recruited him into our workforce.

He was moved into Morani’s 100-acre enclosure where he surprised everyone as it took only three weeks for him to fully adjust to his new home. Baraka is now fully settled at Morani Information Centre where he is doing a splendid job of being Ol Pejeta’s black-rhino ambassador to humans.

16: 00 hrs, you will visit the Endangered Species Enclosure and visit the last remaining Northern White Rhinos (Najin and Fatu).

Northern white rhinos is a subspecies of white rhino. Years of widespread poaching and civil war in their home range have devastated their populations and they are now considered to be extinct in the wild. In 2009, four of the world’s last remaining northern white rhino. Najin, Fatu (females), Sudan and Suni (males) were moved from Dvur Kralove Zoo in the Czech Republic to Ol Pejeta, with the hope that the habitat would provide them with more favourable breeding conditions. All breeding attempts so far have been unsuccessful. In October 2014, Suni, died of natural causes and in March, 2018, Sudan died from age-related health issues. Only two northern white rhino now remain on the planet and are in Ol Pejeta Conservancy. The only hope now is artificially assisted reproduction which involves costly and complicated procedures that have never before been attempted in rhinos. On July 4th 2018, the Dvur Kralove Zoo announced that the first ever hybrid rhino embryo has been successfully created using the Southern white rhino egg and the Northern white rhino sperm that had been collected from Sudan. Scientists hope to perform ovum pick up to harvest eggs from Fatu and Najin in the hope to revive the species from blink of extinction.
