Coral Lodge is located in the north of Mozambique in an area called Varanda, a privately-owned nature reserve. Varanda lies at the tip of a peninsula and is only a short distance from Ilha de Moçambique, the former capital of Mozambique and a UNESCO World Heritage Site
The transfer from Nampula Airport to is about 2 and half hours to get to Ilha de Mozambique which to get to, you cross over a 3.5 km bridge that crosses over the sea to get to Ilha de Mozambique and then you take dhow across to Coral Lodge which takes about 30 minutes.
Once the capital of Portuguese East Africa, Ilha de Mocambique is home to colonial architecture, bustling street markets and wonderful cuisine. In addition, there are long stretches of empty, pristine beaches with excellent snorkeling and diving mere minutes away. At three kilometers long and 500 meter wide, Ilha is a long slim ribbon of gold floating in a sea of emerald.
In 1991 Ilha de Mocambique was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the unique richness of its architecture. For hundreds of years Ilha was a major trading post in intercontinental maritime trade. The result is a fascinating blend of African, Portuguese, Arab and Indian cultures. There are small traditional houses, churches and mosques spread out beyond an imposing fort. Old colonial style Portuguese buildings dating back to the sixteenth century grace the wide streets.
