Day 1: Private Kwara Reserve

Welcome to Maun - Botswana !

Upon arrival in Maun, you will be met by a Moremi air representative who will provide you with your E-tickets for your 30-minute charter flight to Kwara airstrip. Splash Camp is approximately a 10-15 minutes drive from the airstrip.

Splash Camp is built around a pan which attracts a variety of animals year-round and boasts incredible views of an area known for big water crossings that have to be negotiated to reach the camp. Historically, this was the first place that those travelling from Maun to the Delta would hit significant water, and 'Splash' became a nickname for the area.

The relaxed atmosphere of Splash Camp’s main area is enhanced by a plunge pool, bar and lounge that look out over the pan. There is a cosy fire pit where delicious breakfasts are served, and exciting safari stories are shared after dinner.

The Private Kwara Reserve shares an aquatic boundary with the renowned Moremi Game Reserve and features both permanent and seasonal flood plains and extensive bush wilderness.

Whilst at Splash you can enjoy the quintessential Delta experience of a mokoro (traditional canoe) ride and explore the area’s labyrinths of permanent water channels and secret islands.

Go on game drives with a guide-and-tracker team, and be on the lookout for predators like cheetah, leopard, wild dog and lion. Hop on a boat for a unique perspective of the active wildlife at the water’s edge.

During August and December, you will be able to approach fascinating heronries located in nearby lagoons – a pretty singular experience for keen birdwatchers.

Your program of activities is flexible and yours to choose, so feel free to discuss with your guide what exactly you would like to do over the next few days.

The day you arrive, you will be able to enjoy a game drive in the PM and on your return, after a shower and a change of clothes, a drink by the fire ( or two!!), dinner will be served.

Soon after, you may stay and enjoy the incredible starry skies, or merely retire to your room to be lulled to sleep by the sounds of a thousand clicking frogs or the dainty spectacle of fireflies over the water.

Day 2: Private Kwara Reserve

A typical day on safari at Splash Camp will entail the following

After and early morning wake-up call, with coffee or tea (per your choice) you will amble towards the campfire area where a quick breakfast awaits. Piping hot tea, and coffee, as well as a bowl of sumptuous porridge and freshly-baked muffins, are on offer before you head out.

Your early departure is well rewarded as your chances to come across unusual sightings increase during this cross over periods when nocturnal and diurnal game swap shifts.

Splash's game vehicles comfortably seat a maximum of 6 guests in three rows of three seats. Guests are guided by a two person team, enabling the guide to communicate points of interest while the tracker ensures no sightings or tracks are missed.

After your morning game drive, you will return back to camp for brunch and to share your sightings with your camp manager and other guests around the table.

After brunch, you have the opportunity to take a siesta, a dip in the pool, or simply relax on any perch you fancy at camp with your binoculars and absorbing the surroundings as life unfolds in front of you.

Roundabout 1500-1600, when the heat dies down, a feast of cookies, cakes, snacks and hot drinks will be rolled out at the main area, for those needing an afternoon pick-me-up before their PM activity.

As the sun casts its last rays over the horizon its time for a classic safari tradition - sundowners. Your guide will choose a safe and scenic spot to alight from the car and enjoy a drink or two with snacks, whilst you are on level ground with the elements and game that curiously ambles by.

Soon after, as dusk settles in, a high powered beam spotlight will come out and you shall be treated to an exciting night drive on your way back to camp. Night drives are a Splash Camp speciality that unexpectedly reveals a smattering of creatures of the night!

Back in camp, grab a drink by the fire before dinner, which will be a 3 course affair with your main often being served in buffet style.

Once more your day comes to an end and how long you wish to linger by the fire and under the stars is entirely up to you...your bed is going nowhere and your well deserved rest may commence anytme you command it.

Expert tips

There were never any phones or laptops back in the early days of safaris. Splash subscribes to this mindset and your safari is dominated by the sounds of nature (more often than not, right outside your tent!) and not the pinging of your mobile phone. Disconnect: your phone is now just a camera. Relax, recharge and revitalize yourself… The bush is your healing place.

Day 3: Private Kwara Reserve

Keep it varied...explore your surroundings!!

While game vehicles traverse much greater distances, nature walks inspire, humble and afford a remarkable appreciation of Africa’s natural environment. Your eyes will be opened up to a world of smaller plants, insects and tracks easily missed while in a vehicle.  Game walks are not hikes, and are meant to be comfortable strolls providing you with a chance to experience the wilderness in all it’s beauty. Walks can be combined with game drives or mokoro trips and the length of walk can be adjusted to suit your personal desires or level of fitness.

But if you are not fond of walking...explore this waterworld. A boat cruise experience is soothing and relaxing as you drift along the river. Watch elephants bathe, gaze at a multitude of spectacular birds species or hear the snort of a territorial hippo! Double-decker boats are used to provide a better vantage point and offer a wonderful position to enjoy the waterways and their varied inhabitants.

Or get up close and personal and slip into a mekoro (dugout canoe) for a bucket list, must-do, Okavango special experience. The complete stillness of an early morning in the Delta is truly a sublime experience. Glide through its varied and unique waterways and floodplains in this traditional mode of transport.

Whatever you choose to do you are in the best hands, treat yourself beyond your comfort zone and churn up new experiences and memories for a lifetime to enjoy.

Expert tips

We believe the bush dictates the time of your meals, and your safari as a whole, and not the other way around. This is why you’re here, in the wild. Should your vehicle be out following an amazing sighting, your meals will be kept toasty and warm, awaiting your return. Similarly, families with younger children may opt to return earlier in line with their children’s preferences.
