Day 1: Split

ARRIVAL IN SPLIT

Your personal English-speaking driver will be waiting for you at the arrivals of the airport with a private car & driver to transfer to your hotel. Your driver will be holding a sign with your name on it.

Arrive at your hotel and check-in.

Rest of the day at leisure.

Split is one of the most visited destinations in Croatia.  One of the first inhabitants of Split was the Roman emperor Diocletian who started to build his palace in this friendly bay around 293 AD. After his abdication, he withdrew to this luxurious palace of about 30 thousand square meters. The following turbulent centuries made the palace into a town, first populated by the citizens from nearby Salona.

The ruins of Diocletian's Palace, built between the late 3rd and the early 4th centuries A.D., can be found throughout the city. The importance of Diocletian's Palace far transcends local significance because of its level of preservation and the buildings of succeeding historical periods, starting in the Roman period, which form the very essence of old Split. The palace is one of the most famous and integral architectural and cultural buildings on the Croatian Adriatic coast.

Then, discover one of the most famous Croatian products during an olive oil tasting at an olive oil bar. The extra virgin olive oil here is known as the island’s green gold, and it's famed for its subtle flavor and distinct piquant taste.  Ancient Greeks sailed to the island of Hvar some 2400 years ago and planted vines and olive trees.  This is when the cultivation of olive trees and grapes spread across Dalmatia and greatly influenced the local cuisine.

Have a wonderful time in Hvar discovering some of the great Croatian wines and eating lunch among an olive grove or abandoned village.

Dubokovic Medvid Wines are known for their tobacco and mild oak aromas that open into modern spice notes like eucalyptus and coconut, and then after about 20 minutes other aromas begin to appear.  Enjoy these wines - known to be powerful, rounded and warm.

The traditional Dalmatian Peka dish is a culinary marvel to try! An absolute top dish in the Croatian coastal area, usually put on the table when there are guests in the house. Blue Cave has been described and painted by Ransonet and is located in Balun Bay on the eastern part of the island of Bisevo. When the sea is calm and the day is sunny, reflected sun rays pass through the undersea entrance to the cave and create a fascinating blueness, whilst an immersed object on the sea’s surface adopts silverfish sheen.

Embark on a journey to the past of Dubrovnik with your private guide and get an insight of what the daily life in "Ragusa" really looked like. During this tour you will understand the privileges the citizens of this magnificent city enjoyed. They had one of the oldest pharmacies in Europe dating back to the 14th Century, a fountain with fresh water from one of the first water supply systems and a developed citizen care system for the old and poor. Dubrovnik is over a thousand-years-old and its history is visible in every part of the city. It is on the UNESCO's list of cultural heritages and regarded as one of the most beautiful cities on the Mediterranean. To the west of the belfry is the beautiful palace Divona, known as Sponza, the most impressive example of the Gothic-Renaissance architecture. Once it was the customs office, mint and armory. The commercial artery of the city since the 16th Century and in the 17th Century a meeting place for members of the Academy. Today the palace houses one of the richest historical archives in Europe. The Old Town is also famous for Stradun (also known as Placa), the main thoroughfare – one of the greatest pleasures for many visitors is to have a drink in one of the nearby cafes and watch the world go by, whilst they themselves are being watched by the city patron, St. Blaise.

LEISURE

Day at leisure. We suggest you explore the island of Lokrum on your own (without guide).

A visit to this island is an easy day excursion from Dubrovnik. The island is situated some 600 meters from Dubrovnik. The first written mention of Lokrum was in 1023 when the Benedictine abbey and monastery were founded. There are several things you can do on this island which is a Nature Reserve. One of them is taking a step back in time and visiting remnants of the complex that include the 12th or 13th-century Romanesque-Gothic basilica and a newer 15th-century Gothic-Renaissance monastery.  Next, you can take a swim in the island’s Dead Sea. It is a 10-meter-deep lake on the southern part of the island that got its name because of the ease of swimming in it. According to the legend, while returning from the crusade in Palestine, Richard the Lionheart ended on Lokrum after a shipwreck.

Expert tips

How to get there: from the Old Town port you can board on a ship that goes every 30 minutes to the island of Lokrum. The ship is a public sea transfer that lasts for 15 minutes and tickets are available only on spot. Entrance to the island is granted with the ticket.
