Dinner
On your first morning with us, we recommend getting up early to appreciate one of the most important zones of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.
The early morning hours are the best time of day to watch birds, observe their special displays, and listen to their songs. We will jump on the skiffs and head to this area with large trees and old palm trees as well, these components favor the presence of several parrot species. Also you will look for the famous hoatzins nesting a few feet above water, and perhaps a sloth or two of the three-toed kind.
You will have the opportunity to get to know Carola. She is a spiritual caretaker and healer to hundreds of jungle dwellers spread over many roadless miles.
You will start cruising through the Yanayacu and Pucate Rivers, peeking into different creeks and lagoons. This is one of the best preserved and protected zones of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Because of the low level of the river in the low water season, we will visit a natural beach that only appears at this time of year.
At nightfall, your naturalist guides will invite you to board the skiffs. At night, the Amazon wildlife totally changes. You will search for alligators, bats and more nocturnal creatures that are so interesting and unique. Then engage in kayaking and swimming near these enchanting dolphins for an unforgettable experience.

You will continue exploring this area of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. If you want to interact directly with the waters of the Amazon, jump into the kayaks. You will get a closer look at the nature that surrounds you, including the magical pink river dolphin. On your visit to the community, you will see the process of peeling and grating cassava, or look at the tools they use to process the rice (grown locally).
The walk at Fundo Casual jungle trail will take you deep into the rainforest on terra firme (non-flooded forest) where your guide will point out the dynamic creatures and vegetation of the Amazon. Be sure to keep an attentive eye open for spotting surprises! Anaconda, Rainbow Boas, Tarantulas, Poison Frogs, and most recently porquepines have been spotted. This is one of the very few places in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve Amazon Rainforest where you will spot the ever so elusive 2-toed sloth.

Along the Yarapa River, explore this tributary and listen to the jungle sounds. You'll travel to a wide creek leading to a hidden lagoon, where you can reflect on the wildlife. Expect to see hawks, terns, herons, monkeys, and more. You’ll also meet local rivereños, who highlight our connection to this unique ecosystem and the impact we can have on its future. Keep an eye out for pygmy marmosets, squirrel monkeys, and Monk Saki.
As you explore the Yarapa River, you'll experience the stunning “Unión de los Ríos,” where you can toast and marvel at the vibrant colors of the three rivers. The Ucayali River merges with the Marañón River upstream of Iquitos, Peru, forming what other countries consider the main stem of the Amazon.
