21-Day Ultimate South Africa Self-drive Safari - Standard - NETT

Day 1: Johannesburg

  •  Arrive at OR Tambo Airport where you are welcomed by the driver of your hotel. After a short transfer check-in and relax in the gardens of The Safari Club.
  • Dinner can be arranged (pre-book) and a lovely breakfast is served in the morning.
  • If you wish to do an activity today (time allowing) this can be arranged with hotel reception. Perhaps a Pretoria City Tour, Cullinan Diamond Mine Tour, Lesedi Cultural Village Tour, Rietvlei Nature Reserve trip, Magaliesberg balloon trip, Johannesburg day tour, Soweto Township tour, the Apartheid Museum tour or the Cradle of Mankind and Sterkfontein Caves Tour.

Days 2 - 4: Klaserie Private Game Reserve

  • Are you ready to go on safari? You will be travelling to the Klaserie Private Game Reserve part of the Greater Kruger National Park.
  • You have a transfer back to Johannesburg OR Tambo Airport from where you fly to Hoedspruit (flight excluded). On arrival you are met by your driver for a safe transfer to your safari lodge.
  • Experience a Kruger Safari at nThambo Tree Camp and stay in unique accommodation in the heart of the Klaserie. The Klaserie Private Nature Reserve is part of the Greater Kruger and shares unfenced borders with the Kruger National Park. It is here that guests can take part in Big Five game drive safaris as included.
  • The Klaserie also boasts a plethora of interesting birdlife and is a haven for bird-watchers. nThambo Tree Camp has only 5 chalets that sleep 2 people each, which creates an intimate and personal safari experience. The accommodation is unique with bedrooms at eye-level with the trees, offering a different perspective from the private balconies. There is an outdoor lounge and dining area, under thatch, that offers guests beautiful views of the plain and small waterhole in front of camp, as well as the Drakensberg mountain range in the distance. A pool and deck with sun loungers and umbrellas completes the main area and offers a refreshing spot to relax all year round. A traditional boma area with fire place captures the traditional bush camp safari experience. Open to the sky and surrounded by a wooden kraal, the boma is where the warm evenings are spent sharing stories of the bush.

Days 5 - 6: Hazyview

  • After a last safari activity in the morning and a good breakfast your guide will meet you in the lobby. 
  • The guide will take you on the beautiful Panorama Route today, with visits to the Blyde River Canyon, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, God's Window, the Mac Mac Falls, Lisbon Falls and various other beautiful places of nature. The area is also known for its adventure activities ranging from quad biking, horse-riding, gorge-swinging to rafting and canopy tours.
  • The day ends at Hippo Hollow Country Estate, your home for the next 2 nights. Only ten minutes from the world famous Kruger National Park (Phabeni Gate), Hippo Hollow offers comfortable accommodation set within tranquil indigenous gardens just outside Hazyview, the activity gateway to the Kruger Lowveld. This is not your standard accommodation establishment. Hippo Hollow is non-traditional with a refreshing “Out-of-Africa” vibe leaving you feeling totally relaxed. All rooms and chalets have en-suite bathrooms and tea/coffee facilities and are furnished with touches of local wood for a traditional finish. The beautifully maintained gardens, with two swimming pools, is home to a wonderful variety of bird species, and the Sabie River attracts hippo, crocodiles, monkeys, water birds and even elephants from Elephant Whispers.
  • Your rental car will be delivered to you at Hippo Hollow on day 6 in the morning. 

Days 7 - 8: eSwatini

Hazyview – Swaziland                            285km              approximately 3 to 4 hours

  • Travel south and cross the border into Swaziland.
  • Enjoy the full day you have available in Swaziland. Visit the arts and crafts markets in the Ezilwini Valley and Malkerns, admire the amazing glasswork at Ngwenya glass and interact with the friendly Swazi people. For the more adventurous, you can do a canopy tour at the Malalotje Nature Reserve or try river rafting on the Great Usutu River.

Days 9 - 11: KwaZulu Natal

Swaziland - St. Lucia                         300km              approximately 4 to 5 hours

  • You leave the Kingdom of Swaziland and drive further south towards the coast. The next two days will be spent enjoying the area of St. Lucia
  • Lidiko Lodge is centrally situated in St Lucia and within 5 minutes walking distance from all the restaurants, craft markets, walking trails, and main attractions. Lidiko Lodge is the ideal venue to visit the surrounding wetlands, big 5 game parks as well as pristine beaches.
  • Go on safari, take a walk or enjoy a swim in the Indian Ocean. Go on a lake cruise, visit a cultural Zulu village or take a boat ride to look for marlin, sailfish, dolphins and whales. If you are here during season (November - February) you could go on a turtle night drive or take a horse ride on the beach. There's plenty to do and much to see... 

Day 12: Salt Rock

St. Lucia – Dolphin Coast                  195km              approximately 2.5 hours

  • You will travel along the coast towards Salt Rock. Here you will spend the night at the cosy Sea-Rendipity House. The ideal stop over before you make your way to Durban Airport and then fly out to George tomorrow morning. If you don’t feel like going out for dinner, no problem, Sea-Rendipity House serves delicious meals.
  • Close to the beach, a warm welcome and relaxed atmosphere awaits you.This attractive guest house is perfect for those who are looking for the personal touch and attention to detail whilst on holiday. All bedrooms have cool percale linen, air-conditioning, tv, coffee station, beach towels and shade umbrella. Each room has a private entrance leading into lush tropical gardens with an inviting sparkling pool. The breakfast and dinner menus offer excellent and imaginative cuisine. During the day enjoy a drink at the bar or pool or take a 5-minute stroll to the beach.

Days 13 - 15: The Crags

Dolphin Coast – Durban Airport                       30km               approximately 30 minutes

George Airport – Plettenberg Bay                  125km            approximately 1 to 2 hours
OR
Port Elizabeth Airport - Plettenberg Bay    225km            approximately 2 to 3 hours

  • You will travel the short distance to Durban Airport. Drop off your car and take your flight to George or Port Elizabeth (own arrangements).
  • Here you will pick up your new rental car and travel to Plettenberg Bay, centrally located on the well-known Garden Route.
  • Visiting Plettenberg Bay at any time of the year offers amazing ocean wildlife adventures. But none more spectacular than the months the Southern Right whale visits the quiet bay to nurture their young before migrating. During this time, going whale watching is an exhilarating experience. Learn more about these majestic animals and other animals in the region on an ocean safari or get up close and personal in a sea-kayaking trip.
  • If you love hiking, the Garden Route is definitely the place you need to visit. In the area there are many different hiking trails to take advantage of from easy for beginners, to difficult for more experienced hikers. The Robberg Nature Reserve is famous for its beautiful walks and amazing views.
  • Spend some time in Knysna as well. Knysna is a paradise of lush, indigenous forests, lakes and beaches. Nestled on the banks of a beautiful lagoon. The small town has an interesting selection of craft shops, markets and cosy cafés and restaurants.
  • You will be staying at Lily Pond Country Lodge in Nature’s Valley. It offers 10 air-conditioned suites and rooms, each with a private patio and views of the beautiful lily ponds. Lily Pond Country Lodge is a mixture of modern comfort, personalized attention and tranquility. The owner, Margret, cooks with flair and presents her dishes delicately. Days 16 - 17: Hermanus

Plettenberg Bay – Hermanus                  445km              approximately 5 hours

  • You say goodbye to Plettenberg Bay and drive to Hermanus, the whale capital of the country, which offers the best land-based whale watching in the world!
  • Book a whale cruise and view the amazing whales up close and personal.
  • You can also enjoy wine tasting in the picturesque Hemel & Aarde (Heaven on Earth) Valley. The Wine Route, along the R320, boasts more than just its vast array of wine farms. It is also famous for its uninterrupted views of the valley from any one of the superb restaurants, deli’s or stalls, all of which give you the choice of world class wines and meals. You can also enjoy a more thrilling experience by taking a tour of the valley via horseback at Cloud's End, or you can choose to enjoy an adrenaline pumped afternoon of paint ball wars, quad bike or zip-line tours at Hermanus Forest Adventures. There are also hiking and mountain biking trails on offer from other adventure businesses.
  • Whale Rock Luxury Lodge & Villa boasts stunning lush green gardens and a large pool. Whale Rock is situated one block back from the sea and there is a distant sea view from the entrance garden. Days 18 - 20: Cape Town

  • The final stop of this ultimate South Africa tour will be Cape Town.

Day 21: End of Itinerary

  • Make your way to the Cape Town Airport where you will hand in your rental car before you check in for your onward flight home.
  • As an alternative if you prefer, you could also drop the vehicle on the day you arrive in Cape Town from Hermanus and then we could arrange an airport transfer for you on this day.
