Day 2: Johannesburg

Full Day Downtown Joburg including urban art walking tour

Today you’ll head out with your expert guide to explore the urban regeneration that is downtown Johannesburg. Known as the ‘New York of Africa’, this capital city is a vibrant, energetic and creative hub that is sensory overload! We’ll start off with a 3-hour walking tour which is a great way to experience the wonderful array of public art that can be found in the CBD. Art is created for public spaces as opposed to art created for public or private art galleries and the best way to do this is by foot. There is also a unique Graffiti culture whose artwork brightens up the city streets.

Situated in the heart of downtown Johannesburg, Newtown is part of the city’s creative and cultural hub. In the early 20th century with access to the city’s railway, it became the epicenter of commerce with banks, brick companies, fisheries and breweries establishing businesses. With its multiracial diversity, the area was targeted with some of the first forced removals during the apartheid years and significant landmarks such as the Market Theatre was regarded as the ‘Theatre of the Struggle’. Other attractions include Southern African’s largest science center, the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre, Museum Africa, and popular night-time Jazz venue, Bassline.

Just to the east of the city lies another urban regeneration success story – Maboneng meaning ‘Place of light’ is a fully integrated urban neighborhood, home to several independent retail, restaurants, loft apartments, offices, film studios, and creative factory spaces. Arts on Main is one such creative space, consisting of artist studios, galleries and retails spaces – visit on a Sunday for a taste of the local lifestyle with a lively food and design market, Arts on Main. Visit MOAD, the first museum dedicated to design and a traditional healer’s market – said to be one of the oldest in the city.

We’ll also visit Constitution Hill – the precinct is bordered by the inner-city neighborhoods of Braamfontein and Hillbrow and it is here that South Africa's new Constitutional Court opened in March 2004. It was established on the site of the Johannesburg Fort, built in 1898 by the Boers to defend the city from the English, but who later found themselves imprisoned in its walls when the English seized the city.  It was later converted to the country’s most notorious prison - popularly known as "Number Four". The prison held both political activists and common criminals side by side including Mahatma Gandhi, and the prison complex tells the harrowing story of the conditions they were incarcerated in. The Court itself was built using bricks from some of the demolished buildings and is designed with the constitution in mind, housing more than 200 contemporary artworks that celebrate our democracy. The tour of the complex is approximately 1 hour and is guided by one of the local guides

Day 8: Cape Town

Uthando Tour: Scheduled Half Day morning tour and Afternoon private exploration of Woodstock.

uThando South Africa is our chosen charity in South Africa and serves as an umbrella for a wide range of highly effective community projects across the country. In order to showcase these and also to offer a glimpse into the work being done to uplift the disadvantaged in South Africa, daily excursions are offered to visit the sprawling townships around Cape Town, with particular emphasis on at least three of the social development projects being funded through Uthando.

The uThando tours offer a unique and authentic introduction to the social problems confronting so many millions of South Africans, while also illustrating the innovative and inspirational ways in which they are being handled by these marginalized and destitute communities. Very importantly, the projects are not treated as tourist attractions and the tours are designed in such a way as to educate, inform and inspire while also respecting the dignity and privacy of the people concerned. The projects are, after all, places where people live, work and in most cases, just survive.

A portion of the tour cost goes directly to uThando charities.

Includes:  Donation to all projects visited. Transport arranged by Uthando.

This afternoon we’ll stop for a light lunch before heading to Woodstock. Woodstock offers a glimpse into a very different and unexpected slice of Cape Town life. It was originally one of the poorest communities of all – now, it has transformed into a thriving living gallery thanks to the embrace of the surrounding art world, home to studios of some of South Africa’s most famous contemporary artists, fashion designers, and hipster interior creators who we will pop in to visit. What’s also worth a visit is The Woodstock Exchange, Cape Town’s solution to creatives that yearn for a place to create, grow, swop, play, exhibit, and be the very best at their unique craft.

Day 9: Cape Town

Cape Peninsula - Active: Private Full Day

The Cape Peninsula is a complete contrast to the more cosmopolitan city. With its wild national parks, artistic bohemian seaside villages and working fishing harbours this day will be about embracing the locals and spending as much time out of the vehicle as possible. Our first stop is for Cape Town’s coolest coffee spot at Muizenberg’s Surfers Corner the epicentre of South Africa’s surf culture. From here we head to Kalk Bay to explore the working fishing harbour, meet the colourful and entertaining fishing folk and browse the bohemian arty shops.

We head to Simon’s Town to find our own rogue penguins on a local beach. Snorkel and stand-up paddle in sheltered coves, getting a unique perspective of the penguins (weather permitting).

After visiting Cape Point we’ll venture deeper into the Peninsula to explore secluded wild beaches, lesser-known coves, rock pools and shipwreck hiking trails away from the tourist crowds. This part of the Table Mountain National Park is home to ostrich, baboons, tortoises and mountain zebra. ‘

Our return journey along the Atlantic side is a story of amazing views, hidden local cafes and watering holes full of character. We stop en-route for a sundowner at a local hang-out, wrapping up our day out.

*Please note that during your morning brief your guide may advise changing the route of your tour to allow for us to beat any pending crowds into certain areas during peak seasons so that we can spend maximum time exploring outside the vehicle.

Includes: Entrance fees, selection of craft beers, wines, local gins & tonic, specialist tea, coffee & hot chocolate, juices, ice tea, gourmet pantry with home baked goodies & local snacks, toy bag for children, car sets, children activity pack, child friendly snacks

Day 10: Stellenbosch

Today, you will be picked up from your hotel after check-out. Following, enjoy a private full day Winelands tour.

Today, we uncover the natural beauty of the Winelands, an area known for its rows of vineyards and stunning estates dominated by forests, gardens and historic architecture. Our active exploration, on bike or foot, provides an intimate and fun opportunity to see this region – all at your own pace.

Cycle through Franschhoek, admiring the quaint buildings which date back to French Huguenot origins, and pass the bohemian galleries and designer boutiques for which this charming town is renowned. Enjoy sensational vistas over hidden gems, (subject to availability), wine tastings at signature estates and an introduction to wine-making.

Alternatively, hike the Mount Rochelle Nature Reserve, stopping at a fresh-water spring and taking in the picturesque Franschhoek Valley from above. After a rejuvenating break of local coffees and delicious baked goods the wine exploration begins.

This afternoon we discover the university town of Stellenbosch, its youthful vibe so at odds with the old-world buildings and tree-lined streets. Wander through a treasure trove of concept stores, iconic general dealers, art studios and museums, and soak up the vibe with a little people-watching from one of the cafés.

Following the tour, you will be transferred to Twice Central Guesthouse and overnight.
