After Breakfast and Check-out procedures, you meet in the main area of the Hotel for a Full Day Cape Winelands adventure. We head straight out to the beautiful working farm of Babylonstoren.
Set within 3,5 hectares (8 acres) of cultivated fruit and vegetables, the big garden at Babylonstoren is at the heart of the farm. It was inspired by the historic Company’s Garden in Cape Town, which supplied sailing ships of the Dutch East India Company with fresh vegetables and fruit during the days when the Cape was a halfway station between Europe and Asia. But we also link back to the mythological hanging gardens of Babylon. Those were thought to have been created by Nebuchadnezzar in the sixth century BC, for his wife who longed for the mountains and valleys of her youth.
We spend some time exploring the magnificent gardens, before a delicious tasting at the Tasting Room.
The Tasting Room sits adjacent to the Wine Cellar, offering views of the conical Babylonstoren hill, Simonsberg and the Banghoek Mountains. The eye-catching steel-and-glass creation is a modern link between the two Cape Dutch-style wings of the wine cellar, and a perfect reflection of Babylonstoren’s philosophy of embracing both heritage and innovation. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls offer breathtaking views over the vineyards towards the small rocky koppie from which the farm derives its name, while indoors the striking central bar bedecked in vivid green tiles mirrors the lush vineyards beyond. A range of tantalising snack platters with charcuterie, cheese, pâté and fresh fruit and vegetables from the garden are on offer. The platters are an ideal light bite while tasting the Babylonstoren range of wines.
We leave Babylonstoren to continue our adventure in the winelands at the world renowned Delaire Graff Estate.
The combination of Maritime and mountain is a very unique terroir, and here in Stellenbosch it creates our award-winning Delaire Graff wines. A cooling Atlantic sea breeze washes over our steeply sloping vineyards giving us a rich intensity of fruit.
Delaire Graff wines rank among the most prestigious in the Southern Hemisphere. Our unique terroir, on the crest of the panoramic Helshoogte Mountain Pass, is something our ambitious winemaker explores harvest after harvest.
This is where we enjoy a gourmet lunch, with a spectacular view (cost of the meal is not included)
The next stop on our Journey is the wonderful coalition between the Mullineux and Leeu Estates.
In 2007 Chris and Andrea Mullineux established Mullineux Family Wines in the Swartland wine region of South Africa. For many years, our viticulturist, Rosa Kruger, had been enthusing to us about special parcels of vines outside the Swartland, but we couldn’t use these as our Mullineux and Kloof Street ranges are exclusively from Swartland vineyards.
The partnership of Chris & Andrea with Analjit Singh in 2013, and the renaming of the company to Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines, opened the way for a new project – Leeu Passant – to be based at the wine cellar on Leeu Estates in Franschhoek. Leeu Passant was a fantastic opportunity to harness these exciting vineyards to create something under a new label in a different wine region, but with the same no-compromise approach to quality that Chris & Andrea share with Bas, and with which our Mullineux range of wines is made.
In the late afternoon, we make our way into the huguenot village of Franschhoek, our home for the next two nights. Checking into the Beautiful La Cle Village you have some time at leisure before dinner is served at the Hotel.
Tonight you will enjoy a traditional South African Barbeque on the lawns of the estate.
Enjoy a delicious Breakfast at the hotel before embarking on a day exploring the Historical Town of Stellenbosch and the surrounding vineyards.
Stellenbosch is a university town in South Africa's Western Cape province. It's surrounded by the vineyards of the Cape Winelands and the mountainous nature reserves of Jonkershoek and Simonsberg. The town's oak-shaded streets are lined with cafes, boutiques and art galleries. Cape Dutch architecture gives a sense of South Africa's Dutch colonial history, as do the Village Museum's period houses and gardens.
We leave Stellenbosch and make our way to the beautiful Waterford Estate,
A selection of vintage wines that showcase the aging potential of our Waterford Estate Wines. These wines have been set aside and stored under optimum maturation conditions. We invite you to taste these wines and experience the satisfaction of tasting a vintage that is optimally ready for drinking.
Waterford Estate is situated in the picturesque Blaauwklippen Valley, in the world-renowned Stellenbosch region. At Waterford Estate, we have chosen to use only half of the total 120 hectares of land for the planting of vines, in order to preserve and maintain the natural fauna and flora on the Estate. Waterford Estate is owned by the Ord Family and developed under the watchful eye of Kevin Arnold, Cellar Master and Managing Partner, since 1998. The Waterford Estate winery offers a relaxing setting where guests can sit and enjoy various tasting options. With the wine cellar built surrounding the courtyard, guests can observe the workings of the winery, and get a true feel for the wine making process without disrupting the tranquillity of their tasting. In addition to our cellar door experiences, we also offer two vineyard experiences.
In the late afternoon, we return to the Village of Franschhoek where you have time to explore the village on foot, time permitting we will fit another tasting at a local estate.
Dinner tonight is at Leisure in the Village.
