Botswana Off the Beaten Path

Days 1 - 4: Okavango Delta

On arrival in Maun, clear Botswana immigration. You will be met in the arrival hall, and be assisted to your helicopter flight across the Okavango Delta to the Kweene Camp.

You are now on safari! The low level flight across the Delta offers a unique view of this pristine wetland which hosts some of the most spectacular wildlife in Africa.  Magic lies within this World Heritage Site, an inland delta made up of meandering rivers, permanent lagoons and seasonal floodplains spanning across the Kalahari Desert.

Land at your first tented camp in the heart of the Okavango, with no other people around. The vast Abu concession is one of the most productive wildlife viewing reserves in Botswana, with a high concentration of iconic species such as lion, leopard, giraffe and more.

Enjoy four days exploring this remarkable and remote area, on foot, in 4x4 safari vehicles and on the water. The camp crew moves your tented camp after two days to new location on the concession. This safari is an expedition of old.

Four nights between Kweene & Magwegwe camps.

Expert tips

The four day journey starts along the Southern section of the Kweene River in the occasional swamp habitat at our Kweene River camp, an area that has an arid feel to the landscape. As these floodplains are inundated with water less frequently than that of the seasonal swamp, the grass species that dominate the floodplains are much more palatable and thus productive, supporting large herds of grazers and the predators that follow.

Next, our journey moves further North up the Kweene River system to our Magwegwe camp, which is situated in the seasonal swamp habitat. Here, the river receives water on a yearly basis with the inundation cycle of the annual Okavango flood dynamic. This section of the river is an exposé of exceptional Okavango Delta scenery and its wildlife; endless floodplains with well-wooded islands dotting the plains and all-year-round surface water drawing in an abundance of wildlife.
On our moving day between the two camps, we cover the distance by vehicle, on foot or by mokoro; or by a combination of the these. This is a full day of exploration out in the wilderness with a delicious packed lunch enjoyed during a restful siesta; while our back up team moves our camp and sets up for our afternoon arrival in the next location.

Days 5 - 7: Okavango Delta

After breakfast and a morning safari activity, bid farewell to safari crew who have looked after you the previous four days. Board your helicopter, for a flight across the Okavango to Karangoma Camp in the north west.

Arrive at Karangoma in time for lunch and an afternoon safari activity. Enjoy three days exploring this remote part of the delta, with activities on land and on the water.  Karangoma is a more permanent camp, so enjoy the comforts after 4 days of 'glamping'!

Karangoma is the result of a partnership with the local community, and is rooted in Bukakhwe San (Bushman) and Hambukushu cultures of northern Botswana.
The name itself is a Sembukushu word describing ‘drum beating, ancestral healing, bringing good future to the tribe, or, when one is ill, cure dancing’. It is exactly this essence of healing and harmony that the camp seeks to offers its guests in their reconnection with nature and traditional cultures.
And what better place to do that than the productive and beautiful Okavango Delta where this small, exclusive camp offers the opportunity for some truly special game viewing and connection with the natural world.
