Day 1: San Jose

Upon your arrival in San Jose, Costa Rica and after passing through Immigration you will be met by a member of the National Chamber of Tourism (CANATUR) who will give you a sticker with your name and Totally-Latin-America logo. Your sticker facilitates our representative to identify you after you exit the airport building. After clearing immigration and customs, exit the airport terminal and look for a Totally-Latin-America representative who will be waiting for you holding a sign with Totally-Latin-America logo and your name on it. He/she will greet you and present you with land portion vouchers and transfer you to your hotel in San Jose.

Early evening join your guide for an orientation briefing where you will have the opportunity to get an overview of the following days activities, ask questions to prepare for the trip.

Enjoy a delicious dinner (not included) at the hotel restaurant or ask the guide during the briefing for a close by option for dinning out.

Before leaving home make sure you packed your passports, medicines, medical prescriptions and anything you will need during your trip.

Day 2: Golfo Dulce

Mon. 2 Dec 2024

This morning one of our bilingual drivers will meet you at your hotel to take you to the terminal for your local commercial  flight  to Golfito or Puerto Jimenez airport. Enjoy this 40 minute scenic flight over the green mountains and then along the beautiful coastline.

Upon arrival at  the local airport, a lodge representative will be waiting for you holding a sign with your name and will be ready to take you to the dock where you will board a scenic boat transfer to Playa Cativo. Along the way, your local guide will be looking for dolphins, sea birds and other wildlife as you cruise along the lush and remote coastline.

Playa Cativos’s Private Nature Reserve and Piedras Blancas National Park, both surrounding Playa Cativo are a critical last stand for an estimated 750 species of trees, 140 species of mammals, 390 species of birds (with a number of species endemic to the region), 117 species of reptiles, and almost 10,000 species of insects. You’ll truly enjoy our incredible destination in the Osa Region, Golfo Dulce, and Piedras Blancas National Park area. 

At check in time or during the afternoon,  after you have settled in your beautiful room and have tasted your first delicious lunch at the lodge, your local guide will coordinate with you and schedule the different activities included during your stay.

Day 3: Golfo Dulce

Today meet with your local guide at the place and hour already confirmed the day before  to  start this new day of adventure and fun. Be ready to enjoy the full day in paradise exploring the many different beauties your local guide will help you to discover. There is just so much to do here - that question will be deciding! Favorite activities include dolphin and whale watching, nocturnal hikes, a bio-luminescence tour, stand up paddling, kayaking in the mangrove, hiking, bird watching, yoga, swimming and more! Over the next few days, you'll have time to enjoy many of these. 

After this amazing day we invite you to relax in the pool or beach area and enjoy a healthy drink enjoying the sunset.

Our ongoing research permits long-term studies to know the status of the different flora and fauna species of the tropical rainforest, including the Wildcats Monitoring program, Coral Reefs Restoration Program, Mammals & Birds Population Programs and many upcoming initiatives will help us preserve biodiversity in the region.

  • Morning Shore, River & Estuary Birdwatching – Highlighs: Willet, Whimbrel, Tricolor Heron, American Pigmy King Fisher. 3 hrs approx.
  • Primary Rainforest Birdwatching Exploration. Highlighs: Scaly Breasted Leaftosser, Orange Billed Sparrow, Black Billed Wren. 2 hrs approx.
  • Tropical Gardens & Beach Birdwatching: Highlighs: Toucans, Scarlet Macaws and over 11 hummingbird species. 
  • Nocturnal Rainforest Guided Hike.1,45 hrs approx. 
  • Southern Costa Rica´s Nature, Ecology & Sustainability Talk, with our nature Ecologist and/or Biologist. 
  • Self-guided trails to observe birds around Cativo’s Rainforest Nature Reserve.

Day 5: Santa Elena

We know it is hard but it is time to say adios to this amazing place and to your friends at Playa Cativo. A hotel representative will take you from the hotel to the local airport to board the local scheduled flight back to San Jose. Have your camera handy just in case you want to take some nice shots of the coastline, mountains and little villages you can observe from the plane.

Upon arrival in San Jose one of our bilingual host-drivers will be waiting for you holding a sign with your name on it, he will take you to Monteverde area where you will spend the next two nights. 

Early evening your private host-driver will take you to Curi Cancha Reserve for an amazing experience, your guide will be looking for some of the different animals and small creatures that are awake usually only at nigth time.

Day 6: Santa Elena

Fri. 6 Dec 2024

Another day full of activity, fun and adrenaline.

First explore with your host-driver the beautiful Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, here you will walk with your guide different trails, he will explain you about the importance of the cloud forest, the birds and animals you can find there and hopefully you can observe the amazing Resplendant Quetzal. 

In the afternoon after you have enjoyed a delicious lunch, your host-driver will take you to Monteverde Sky Park, where first you will observe the forest canopy on a slow tram ride, then comes the fun part, you will be traveling through and above the forest on a zip line, definitely your adrenaline will rise during this part of the tour.

Day 7: Alajuela

This morning before travel back to San Jose you will explore the trails of Aguti Reserve that is located right next door to your hotel.

Once at Xandari Resort you can explore the beautiful gardens of the hotel where you can find many different trees, flowering plants and many different birds. One place you must spend time is the beautiful pool area where you can enjoy outstanding views of the central valley and nice sunsets. 

At night time, besides enjoying a delicious dinner at the hotel restaurant (extra cost), you can also enjoy very nice views of valley below.

Day 8: Alajuela

This morning is free for you to explore the hotel trails  and discover the beautiful waterfall located in the property and to spot more birds that can be found in the area.

Around noon one of our bilingual host-drivers will meet you at your hotel to take you to Doka Coffee Plantation where you will learn about the history of the coffee in Costa Rica and show you the whole coffee process from the plant to your cup. Before start the tour you will enjoy a delicious lunch prepared and served at the coffee plantation restaurant. 

At the end of the tour you will be delighted with a fresh and delicious cup of top quality Costa Rican coffee as well you can taste chocolates with coffee.

Xandari Resort Gardens and Trails

Xandari Resort’s 40-acre property includes diverse tropical gardens and a forest reserve with several miles of trails that lead to multiple waterfalls, and over 140 species of both resident Costa Rican and migratory North American bird species have been reported on our eBird hotspot. Every morning, we offer a bird-watching tour through our trails and gardens that lasts 1 to 2 ½ hours (depending on guest preference). Dawn choruses resound with Rufous-naped Wren chatter and whistles from Costa Rica’s national bird, the Clay-colored Thrush, often interspersed with Yellow-throated Euphonia and Barred Antshrike song, or the manic duet of local Laughing Falcons.
