Expert tips:
Lorokul Cultural Group
The cattle-herding Karamojong occupy the north-east of Uganda, in an area covering one tenth of the country. Discover the unique culture of this remote tribe with the Lorokul Cultural Group, located just outside Kidepo Valley National Park.
Their main livelihood is herding livestock, and the social and cultural importance will be explained as you walk with the guides to the traditional Karamojong manyattas (homesteads), granaries and cattle enclosures. Learn how the villagers make their distinctive beads, sample the local cuisine, and even meet the Karamojong King, who will narrate the tribe’s folklore and beliefs.
The fee for this tour has contributed to the construction of a clinic and the training of midwives – essential facilities in this isolated region.

At 2pm the boat trip on the Nile starts, to the bottom of the Murchison Falls. This boat trip takes about 3 hours and during the tour you will see a lot of wild animals, such as Hippos, Buffalo, Crocodiles and perhaps some Elephants. For people who are in good physical condition there is the possibility to be deposited at the bottom of the Waterfall and to take a hike up, along the Waterval. This hike is pretty steep and slippery. After the boat trip / hike it is time for dinner at the lodge.

Time to look for the Chimpanzees in Kibale National park. You first go to the rangers in the park for a short explanation. Then the walk starts in the rainforest, the walk can be quite heavy, take good shoes and possibly a poncho. There will be a lot of time to listen carefully to see if you can hear the Chimps, the rangers are trained in this so chances are that you will find the Chimpanzees! After the Chimp trek you can relax in the garden of the resort. If you still feel like a walk then you can go to "top of the world" where you have beautiful views over the area with a number of crater lakes
After lunch it is time for a walk through the marsh, during this walk you will spot many different birds and perhaps even some monkeys.
Day notes
Today you leave the rainforest behind and head for Queen Elizabeth national park, along the Rwenzori mountains that form the border with Congo. After arriving at the park the ride to the accommodation already gives you a great chance to spot wildlife. You take a boat trip on the Kazinga channel. This channel connects two lakes and in and along this canal many different animals live, especially waterfowl. After the boat trip, it's time for dinner and an overnight stay at Queen Elizabeth Bush Lodge just outside the park boundary on the shores of the Kazinga Channel.

Day notes
Today is the day for Gorillas. After breakfast you go to the rangers post for the briefing. After the briefing, the search begins for the Mountain Gorillas. Depending on the location of the family you are going to visit, the trip can take a few hours. The landscape is mountainous so take good walking shoes. After this exciting experience, it's time to relax at the lodge and view your photos.
NOTE: if there was no time or option to visit the Batwa there is time to plan this today.
Expert tips:
When you are with the gorillas:
- A 7 meter (21 feet) distance should tried to be observed at all times from the gorillas. The further back you are, the more relaxed the group will be.
- You must stay in tight group whey you are near the gorillas.
- Keep your voices down at all times. However, it is okay to ask the guide questions.
- Do not smoke, drink or eat when you are near the gorillas. Eating or drinking inevitably will increase the risk of food/drink morsels/droplets falling, which could increase the risk of transmission of diseases.
- Sometimes the gorillas charge. Follow the guides example (crouch down slowly, do not look the gorillas directly in the eyes and wait for the animals to pass). Do not attempt to run away because that will increase the risk.
- Flash photography is not permitted! When taking pictures move slowly and carefully.
- Do not touch the gorillas. They are wild animals.
- The maximum time you can spend with the gorillas is one hour. However, if the gorillas become agitated or nervous, the guide will finish the visit early.
- After the visit keep your voices down until you are 200 meters away from the gorillas.
General health rules:
Remember that mountain gorillas are very susceptible to human diseases. The following rules are ways to minimize the risk your visit might poses to them:
- Respect the limits imposed on the number of visitors allowed with the gorillas each day. This minimizes the risk of disease transmission and stress to the group.
- If you are feeling ill, or you are carrying a contagious disease, volunteer to stay behind. An alternate visit will be arranged for you, or you will be refunded your money.
- If you feel the urge to cough or sneeze when you are near the gorillas, please turn your head away and cover your nose and mouth in order to minimize the spread of bacteria or viruses.
- Always stay 7 meters (21 feet) away from the gorillas. This is to protect them from catching human diseases.
- Do not leave any rubbish (eg. food wrappers) in the park; foreign items can harbor diseases or other contaminants.
- If you need to go to the toilet while in the forest, please ask the guide to dig you a hole with his panga. Make sure the hole is 30 cm deep and fill it in when you are finished.
What to bring on your Gorilla Safari:
- Wear comfortable hiking shoes suitable for steep muddy slopes.
- Carry a packed lunch and enough drinking water.
- Carry rain gear, sunscreen lotion, a hat (as the weather is unpredictable) and insect repellent.
