Day 1: Arusha / Moshi to Machame Camp
(Elevation: 1,950 meters to 2,850 meters)
After breakfast, you’ll be transferred from Arusha or Moshi to Machame Gate, the official start of your trek. The drive takes you through vibrant markets and small villages, where traditional mud houses line the roadside, offering a glimpse into local life. Upon reaching Machame Gate at approximately 6,400 feet (1,950 meters), the adventure begins.
The trail winds upwards through a lush rainforest, alive with the sounds of birds and monkeys. As you ascend, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the surrounding dense vegetation. A packed lunch will be provided along the way, and as you climb higher, the rainforest slowly transitions into the heather zone at about 10,000 feet (3,000 meters), offering new scenery to explore.
This section of the trek takes around 5-6 hours, providing a beautiful introduction to the mountain.
Upon arrival at Machame Camp, located just 50 meters west of the trail, you’ll settle in for the night. Water is available from a nearby stream, just a 5-minute walk down the valley.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
(Elevation: 2,850 meters to 3,800 meters)
After breakfast at Machame Camp (2,850 meters), the trail begins with a gentle walk across a small valley before ascending a long, steep ridge. As you gain altitude, the rainforest gives way to giant heather and volcanic rock formations, opening up stunning vistas of Kilimanjaro’s most iconic features.
As you climb, enjoy panoramic views of Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira Peaks, with Mount Meru floating in the distance on clear days. This section of the trail offers excellent opportunities for photography, especially as the landscape becomes more open and dramatic.
At approximately 3,500 meters, you’ll descend briefly into a river gorge, adding variation to the terrain before climbing back out onto the Shira Plateau. This expansive, high-altitude landscape has a stark, wild beauty—barren, rocky, and vast. Keep an eye out for Eland and Klipspringer, small antelopes that are sometimes seen grazing in this area.
The final stretch to Shira Camp (3,800 meters) is relatively easy, taking you just 30 minutes across the plateau. The camp is perfectly situated for stunning sunset views and offers a peaceful night under the stars. Water can be collected from a small stream just five minutes from camp.

Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp
(Elevation: 3,800 meters to 3,900 meters)
After a hearty breakfast at Shira Camp, the day begins with a steady ascent through the moorland zone. As you move along the Shira Plateau, the terrain becomes more rugged, and you'll be treated to spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. The route heads east, with the towering Lava Tower (4,500 meters) coming into view, creating a stunning focal point against the horizon.
As you approach the Lava Tower junction, you'll take a break for lunch, allowing you to rest and acclimatize before the next section. After lunch, the trail descends into the Great Barranco Valley (3,900 meters), where the stunning Barranco Camp awaits. The valley is sheltered by towering cliffs and offers panoramic views of the plains far below.
This section of the trek is designed to help with acclimatization by providing a combination of ascent and descent. The scenic descent into Barranco Valley offers opportunities for incredible photos of the surrounding wilderness, including the imposing Barranco Wall, which looms above the camp.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp
(Elevation: 3,900 meters to 4,600 meters)
After a hearty breakfast at Barranco Camp, the day begins with the thrilling ascent of the famous Barranco Wall. This steep and challenging climb offers not only a sense of adventure but also stunning panoramic views as you make your way upward. The Barranco Wall is a highlight of the trek, and as you climb, you’ll be treated to incredible vistas of the surrounding landscapes and distant peaks of Kilimanjaro.
Once at the top of the Barranco Wall, the trail flattens out, and the path continues on the southeastern slopes of Kibo, passing through rugged terrain. You’ll enjoy sweeping views of the Southern Ice Fields and glaciers, adding to the sense of beauty and adventure. The route leads you across rocky ridges and barren landscapes as you gradually ascend.
After a well-deserved lunch at Karanga Camp (13,100 feet / 3,900 meters), the trail continues on steep, rocky paths until you reach Barafu Camp (4,600 meters), your home for the night. Barafu Camp is situated in a barren, rocky landscape, and it offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.
The remainder of the day is spent resting and preparing for the final push to Uhuru Peak. It's important to take it easy and conserve energy for the challenging ascent ahead.

Dinner and overnight at Barafu Camp, where you'll have a quiet night of rest before embarking on the final stretch of your journey to Uhuru Peak.

Day 5: Barafu to Uhuru Peak to Millennium Camp
(Elevation: 4,600 meters to 5,896 meters to 3,100 meters)
Early Morning Ascent:
Your day begins in the early hours with a pre-dawn start. After a light breakfast, you will begin your final ascent to Uhuru Peak at approximately 1:00 a.m. The route is steep, and you will be climbing through loose volcanic scree and rocky terrain, but with determination and a steady pace, you'll begin to make your way upwards toward the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.
After several hours of climbing, you will reach Stella Point (5,735 meters) on the crater rim. From here, you'll rest briefly and be treated to the first light of dawn, painting the surrounding landscape with beautiful shades of orange and pink. For those still feeling strong, a final short climb will take you to Uhuru Peak (5,896 meters), the highest point on Kilimanjaro, where you’ll be rewarded with unforgettable panoramic views of the vast African plains and glaciers surrounding the summit.
Summit Experience:
Standing at Uhuru Peak, the achievement of reaching the roof of Africa will be yours. This is the ultimate highlight of your trek, and it's a truly surreal experience. Take time to celebrate the moment and enjoy the views before beginning your descent.
Descent to Millennium Camp:
After spending time at the summit, it's time to descend. The descent from Uhuru Peak to Barafu Camp is quicker, and after a short break for some refreshment, you will continue down to Millennium Camp (3,100 meters). The descent through the alpine desert and moorland will offer new vistas of the mountain landscape and the surrounding wilderness.

Day 6: Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi / Arusha or Kilimanjaro Airport
(Elevation: 3,100 meters to 1,650 meters)
After breakfast at Millennium Camp, the final leg of your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a descent through the lush forest and moorland zones. The trail is well-maintained, and as you make your way down, you'll enjoy the changing landscapes, from the alpine desert back into the rainforest.
Descent to Mweka Gate:
The route takes you through a scenic path that descends gradually toward the Mweka Gate (1,650 meters), located on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro. The trail is lush and green, and you'll pass through vibrant rainforests teeming with birdlife and small wildlife, offering a relaxing end to your trek.
Once you reach Mweka Gate, you’ll complete the necessary paperwork and receive your climbing certificate to commemorate your achievement. From here, your guide will arrange a transfer to your chosen destination.
Transfer to Moshi / Arusha or Kilimanjaro Airport:
After completing the descent, you’ll be transferred to Moshi or Arusha, depending on your preferences. If you're catching a flight, you will be taken directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport to board your flight home, filled with memories of your incredible adventure.
